Iran wouldn't assassinate him for the same reason the British didn't assassinate Hitler in WW2, the fear he might be replaced by someone competent.
It's also scary that JD Vance would be considered competent.

Also, the whole question of over and underestimating Trump's ignorance is a moot one. Trump is a sociopathic BSer, after all, and what he says and does have tenuous links to truth and reality at the best of times. He may know, he may not know, but his behavior will often be indistiguishable regardless of which it actually is.

That is entirely true. The truth doesn't matter so what he knows is what he wants to be true regardless of reality, I'm sure there are times when what he believes is actually true. Broken clock and all that.
