Ed Israel/US Attacks Iran /Yet Another Country/Iran

Interesting episode about the origins and history of the Iranian Nuclear Program, civil and militarily.
TL/DR:
The program started as a prestige project of the Shah; nuclear weapon development was started as a deterrent against a Soviet invasion.
Abandoned after the Revolution, resurrected after the use of chemical weapons (with backing from the West) by Saddam in the Iran-Iraq war.

OK Roger Ramjet and Great Zanaga have pretty much supported Iran.
The one that gets to me is their finding Iran closure of the Perisan Gulf to be somehow OK. The straits are beyond the legal limit and are clearly international waters.

Dudalb: I am totally opposed to what Netanyahu has been doing in Gaza and Lebanon.
I am also opposed to what Trump and Netanyahu have done with Iran, starting a war for no real reason.
I also think the Iranian mullahs, Mamas, and Hezbollah are utterly evil.
There's no right side in this mess
Opposing Trump doesn't mean supporting Iran.

Dudalb has never looked at a map.

at the narrowest point, the Strait is a bit under 24 nautical miles (39km), which means that the Exclusive Economic Zones (12 nautical miles, 22km) of Iran and Omar overlap. There is no way to cross the Strait without going either through Iranian or Omani Waters.
And by universally accepted 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, these two country can charge what they want for passage for through their waters, or ban passage altogether.

This is a fact that seems to have eluded a lot more people than just Dudalb.

I support the sovereignty of all nations, especially against illegal invasions, 'regime change', extrajudicial killings and murder of innocent civilians. Once a country crosses that line they are the bad guys, no matter what the pretext. I also take a very dim view of sanctions and trade embargoes in order to 'starve them out' simply because their politics aren't agreeable or they aren't being sufficiently 'cooperative'.

America's continued interference in the Middle East created the situation we have today. It is more responsible for what Iran is now than Iran itself is. And it continues to make it worse. "Iran must never have a nuclear weapon", but with Israel it's "don't ask don't tell" - while they commit genocide on the indigenous population, largely funded by the US. The World is waking up to the lies and getting tired of it. Some of us are old enough to remember Vietnam, El Salvador, Grenada and many other examples of US meddling in the affairs of other countries. The list of United States military operations is ridiculously long - and that doesn't cover CIA operations.

The current Iranian regime is bad for sure (made worse by recent US action), but that's their problem to deal with - not ours. Change must come from within. The US itself could do with regime change right now, but I don't support actions by foreign powers to precipitate it. You agree with that, right? If so then why should Iran be any different?

The current US administration is one of the most corrupt governments in the world. At least 30% of the country are hard-line religious fanatics who don't believe in democracy and want to hasten Armageddon - and they have infiltrated the government and military. The US is the only country in the World to have used a nuclear weapon in warfare - twice - when their enemy was no threat and already facing certain defeat. Trump has threatened to obliterate Iran several times already, and he has the power to do it. If that doesn't scare you...

Israel planned to kill the Iranian Negotiation Team, had planes in Iranian airspace to shoot their plane down.
US gave Iran a heads-up and told Israel to stop it.
Israel is showing once again that it is hostis humani generis and the only difference between it and the nazis is in the semites it has slated for eradication.

Trump is back to talking about bombing bridges and power plants in Iran:

We're going to win one way or the other . We're either gonna make a deal or we're gonna finish the job, OK? And it won't be tough to finish the job, uh, I'd rather make a deal because I don't want to affect 91 million people. We can knock down their bridges in one hour. We can knock out their energy supply

They don't have any money now. We haven't given him any money, but we can knock out their electricity and power generating

Trump's also threatening to take a box cutter to each and every one of Iran's reflecting pools' liners.

I agree, but a couple of people here have IMHO have gone over the line and are supporting Iran.

I don't support Iran, but closing the Strait is pretty much the only possible move for them, in the game Trump has decided they must play. So I don't begrudge them doing what they have to do, if they don't want to surrender.

What baffles me is why the US can't just force the Strait. A single carrier group should be able to do the job.

I guess the silver lining is that Trump is apparently incapable of wielding the US military industrial complex to full effect.

They had a carrier there. It was literally ◊◊◊◊◊◊ and caught fire.
