Merged (edited) General thoughts about Christianity and the bible

We have genealogies from Adam to Jesus.
Are those fictitious people with fictional lives?
The authors of that schlock probably retro'd the lineages to fit his madness.

AI Overview

In scholarship, single sourcing is the over-reliance on a single author, publication, or dataset to support a claim. It undermines the validity of your work by introducing uncorrectable bias, increasing vulnerability to factual errors, and severely limiting the comprehensive understanding of a topic. [1, 2, 3]
Key reasons why this practice is strongly discouraged include:
  • Amplified Bias and Blind Spots: Every scholar operates within a specific theoretical framework. Relying on one source means adopting their methodology, subjective interpretations, and unstated prejudices. [1]
  • Fact-Checking Vulnerability: If your single source contains a miscalculation, logical fallacy, or outdated information, your entire argument collapses alongside it. [1]
  • Lack of Consensus: Academic writing thrives on synthesis. Pointing to one source ignores the broader scholarly dialogue and prevents you from presenting a well-rounded, balanced argument. [1]
To ensure your research meets academic standards, it is best practice to perform a comprehensive literature review. If you need help refining your research methods, identifying diverse source material, or verifying academic consensus, let me know. [1]

How did the Israelites get to the peninsula?

Errrr, walked? Rode on an ass/donkey/mule? Chariot? Swam a bit? Used a couple of boats or rafts? Hitched a ride on a passing turtle?

Weren't actually there, actually hiding out in a nice resort on the Levantine coast, then sent some dodgy, mis-leading post cards?

Who knows? I once claimed to be in Sheffield, when I was actually ringing from Carlisle station: folk tell such lies when it suits them.

A myth talks about a myth. How meta.
ISTR Sam Gamgee using the myth of Beren and Luthien to make the point that, though the quest of the Ringbearers seemed hopeless, there was nevertheless reason to go on.

In fact, there's an analogue to the argument from design here. We see in the Bible many examples of exactly the sort of features we see in works of fantasy fiction, and very few of those we see in carefully researched studies of history. Should we not, therefore, using the same argument as the ID proponents, conclude that the Bible is not an accurate historical record, but rather a work of fantasy fiction?

I mean, the Bible also says that the Hebrews destroyed the walls of Jericho, but archaeological evidence shows that it lost its stone walls during the middle bronze age, kinda revived in the late bronze age as a small town with unimpressive mud-brick walls, and then it was completely razed again. That's long before the timeline in the Bible.

You know that the Suez canal didn't exist before 1869, and even starting to dig didn't begin until 1859, right? I mean, how else than overland do you think the Egyptians got to or collected tribute from the vassal cities in the peninsula?

Plus, semitic languages existed in the area for ages, and Hebrew was just one of them. In fact ever since the fall of the Sumerian empire. Possibly before too, but they wrote in Sumerian anyway because it was the official language.

Rusty knows nothing of the sort! For him the world is young and unchanging. Except for the occasional flood, of course.

You don't understand: We know Moses is real, because Paul attests to him. We know Paul is real because Peter attests to Paul. We know Peter is real because God attests to Peter. And we know God is real because Rusty attests to God.
But who attests to Rusty, eh?
