Autistic genius novelist woos the literary world with novel composed using "Facilitated Communication"

The same route as any other applicant!
Except that his mother was the sole conduit for anything he 'said'. You've yet to show otherwise.

You've failed to address the following:
Where do you get the idea 'All messages "from Woody" come from his mother.'? Oh, it was a newspaper headline! Did you know headlines are dreamt up by sub-editors as clickbait? They may have little relevance to the issue, especially when surrounded by quotation marks?

Just so you know, Woody's tutor/mentor at Columbia was Rivka Galchen. So not just his mother.

Actually, yes, just his mother. This is what Rivka Galchen actually said:
At Columbia, where his professors included Rivka Galchen, Mary attended every class and helped him compose his manuscripts using the letter board. Galchen, who worked with him throughout his enrollment, says that it is natural for people to wonder about the line between transcribing and cuing. “His mother is present in the sense that she’s with him all the time, but I didn’t have any more doubt than I would about someone else in the class having their boyfriend write their work,” she says.

There's a lot of wiggle room in that last quote!

A huge number of books are ghost written

Not by actual ghosts.

...The copyright goes to whoever asserts it, and here it is Woody claiming authorship of Upward Bound.

Is it? How did Woody assert that claim?

Surely, even as you typed this, you recognised it was a perfectly circular argument: It's Woody's work, which his mother transcribed, and you know this because he claims it is so; a claim his mother inevitably also transcribed.

Emily Bronte says 'hi'.

A huge number of books are ghost written (Spare, Nobody's Girl, Waiting to be Heard, et al) plus friends in the publishing trade hint that many of the top income writers who churn out 'novel' after novel, have teams of ghostwriters and 'researchers' supplying them with material. (Not to mention editors changing stuff.) These can never be Booker-nominated. But who's to know John Smith wrote that book and not someone else using his name? You don't. The copyright goes to whoever asserts it, and here it is Woody claiming authorship of Upward Bound.
Irrelevant strawman.

If someone has their boyfriend in the classroom it hardly means boyffy is doing all the homework!

Because he is published by Penguin Random House, who have teams of Corporate lawyers who understand all of this stuff. Columbia features Woody's book on its Arts Department webpage!

Did you know, to get a Masters in Creative Writing, it has to be, (a) 100% original and (b) all your own work..?

The Quran is the literal world of God, the proof is that it says so in the Quran.

It does if the boyfriend is visibly writing your essays for you whilst you look at screens and wave vaguely at a letter board.

The fact that Columbia and Random House failed to do their due diligence does not mean everyone else is obliged to do likewise.

Plus (a) I very much doubt that there are many corporate lawyers who know anything at all about facilitated communication and (b) even if they do have their suspicions, publicity and profits are both good reasons to turn a blind eye.

We're back at the Cottingley Fairies again. This circular argument is circular.

The corporate lawyers would recognise that nobody other than either Woody or his mother is the real author, and that she is ascribing the authorship to him, so that if she is not telling the truth about that, nobody is going to sue and assert their own right to authorship. The fairytale of Woody's authorship is not a problem for the publisher.

For some reason, I'm entirely unsurprised that you've failed to address the main point.

You claimed that Rivka Galchen's involvement showed that not all communication came via Woody's mother. The quote shows you are mistaken.

Do you have anything else that shows Woody can communicated without his mother being in the loop?

We agreed did we not, that FC was only unethical when applied to someone who can't possibly know what they are doing? Take yourself, if someone gets you to communicate non-verbally and you are fully conscious, how is it wrong?

I became so interested in this issue, I actually at last looked at a book I downloaded three or for years ago - in support of a CAB campaigner* who was doing it as not-for-profit. The focus of the book is on learning disabled clients who were changing from DLA to PIP. Astonishingly, the examples he cited were people with severe limitations. One had a gene mutation, which meant he would never progress from mental age 12. The DWP PIP assessor marked him down as okay to work. He lost DLA and PIP. This guy had simply affably gone along with the assessor answering affirmatively to all the questions, such as being able to manage money, had no toilet difficulties, knew how to 'travel to London', etc. It turns out he had enormous problems, couldn't handle money, was doubly incontinent and could only 'travel to London' with a responsible person!

This is what happens when a vulnerable person is not given someone to be present in highly stressful situations.

Woody has his mother present because he suffers neurological sensory overload. Can you even imagine the stress of being in a TV studio on television (yet people want him to perform intricate tricks live on Jenna's Book Club even though his stress levels are through the roof!).

She accompanies him to class in New York because he is a severely disabled person and the University is obliged to provide 'suitable accommodation'.

In addition, the aforesaid book demolished the popular myth the disabled get special favourable treatment as being utter rot! Quite the reverse. They do not leap into prestigious university courses because of their mother. In Upward Bound it becomes clear his family had to downsize after the death of his father, far from rolling in money.

You're the one claiming a conspiracy.

Er, the American Hearing and Sight Association and American Psychological Society...? You know, the guys who issued the kybosh into Disability law that it's unethical for institutions and corporations to use FC on severely disabled persons with severe learning difficulties?
That doesn't cover the "only" part of "only unethical".

Do they say it is ethical to use pretend communication when the disabled person has a high intellect but is unable to communicate?
