That's not the action Trump announced earlier. It was most definitely about vessels which had paid Iran to use the Strait being prevented by the US from using the Strait. This sounds like backpedalling and making policy changes on the hoof.

Sure does give you a sense of reassurance these smart people are in full control of the situation. Thought nobody.

Trump was understandably angry at Iran trying to extort the world. After all, that's his job!

UK has already said no

The UK will not be involved in enforcing the US military blockade of Iran, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

UK minesweepers and anti-drone capabilities will continue operating in the region but British naval ships and soldiers will not be used to block Iranian ports.

Oil prices jumped above $100 a barrel as energy markets reopened after talks between the US and Iran ended without a new deal and Donald Trump said he would blockade Iranian ports.

Global benchmark Brent crude is up by 7.5% at $102.37, while West Texas Intermediate is 8.3% higher at $104.56.

If Trump is sending the USN to play pirates for him, he ought at least to tell everyone what the rules of his new game are. Is he blockading Iranian ports, or is he stopping ships passing through the Straits if they paid Iran a toll?

It's not like a supertanker has to pull into an Iranian port to hand over sacks of cash. The owners just wire the money to the Head of Daylight Robbery, Tehran and the ship goes on its merry way.

What we have not hit are their small number of, what they call, "fast attack ships," because we did not consider them much of a threat. Warning: If any of these ships come anywhere close to our BLOCKADE, they will be immediately ELIMINATED, using the same system of kill that we use against the drug dealers on boats at Sea. It worked. They never had nukes and they still haven't got nukes. They had enough time to develop them. Even if they had them they are only useful as a defensive weapon. A first strike on Israel would result in nuclear retaliation. They only work as a first strike weapon if you are the only country that has them.

This is the problem, you are thinking like an American politician (well Trump), that you can do anything you can get away with. that your word means nothing, you promise something one day and do the opposite the next. That so long as you keep things covert you don't have to obey the law. Within an Islamic state, where the Koran is the effective constitution, where Islamic law is the law, a fatwah isn't PR, it is a legal ruling, from the highest authority.

Iran wanted the ability to make a bomb if the situation changed, if it was directly attacked by a nuclear power. But until that happened the Fatwa remained in force. Having the ability to make a nuclear weapon (which many countries possess) is very different from making a nuclear weapon. Having UF₆ enriched to 60% is a long way from having a weapon. Though admittedly closer than having 20% enriched uranium. The direct attack by two nuclear powers has changed the case, the fatwah may now be re-thought. Certainly had there been regime change it would likey not have been enforced.

Lying to infidels in service to allah is perfectly acceptable under islamic law.

So why do you insist on accepting whatever Iran says is true at face value? Seriously, Iran has been actively sponsoring and directing terrorist organizations that kill civilians around the globe for decades.

The UK isn't capable of enforcing a blockade. It is unprepared for war, and won't be ready to for years. This isn't my assessment, this is the assessment of the Royal Navy itself.

This is a shameful fall from what was once a great institution. It now has more admirals than combat vessels.
