As I understand it Khamenei was ill and expected not to last too much longer, news reports I've heard suggest that he deliberately allowed himself to be targeted so he could die a martyr. His natural death would have given the possibility (though no guarantee) of a more moderate leader replacing him, being killed by a foreign power pretty much ensures that a hard liner will take his place and swing some support back to the regime.
