I agree. I'm not opposed to using AI for fact-checking in general, as long as you're not asking Grok to evaluate Elon Musk's latest claim. Previously, using a search engine meant you had to sift through a bunch of relatively unsophisticated textual matches to see how the referenced documents applied to the question at hand. It's time-consuming and intellectually difficult. Since the AI has previously digested the whole Internet, it can use mathemagical computation to organize the available documentary evidence. Depending on how you write your prompt, you may get a good summary on the merits of a controversial subject, or you may get a "balanced" view that tries to give some weight to both sides. That's why it always pays to dig deeper if you're using the AI to fact-check. It's tempting to offload the actual thinking to the AI.

As opposed to using the AI's engine to synthesize a reasonable, hopefully objective summary of the available facts, it's when you use that same AI to generate things that a separate fact-check becomes important. The AI may hallucinate. Or it may simply invent things as instructed in the prompt and render them realistically enough to convince the casual consumer. Intentionally fake content is the pressing danger.

Using AIs to write legal briefs is a good example. When a lawyer alleges a prior determination of law in favor of a point, a citation is universally required. The opposing party and the court must be able to see and test the application of that reasoning to the present case. Lately some lawyers have gotten into hot water for submitting AI-written briefs that rely on hallucinated cases that don't actually exist. That's sanctionable behavior. Even if you're using AI in good faith for this task, you need to separately fact-check your brief's citations against a properly stupid source such as Westlaw.

Imagine if we get into the habit of conversing with a generative AI in both its generative mode and its summary or conversational mode. Your newly-generated brief cites to Smith v. Gulf Coast Energy Corp., 742 F.3d 512 (5th Cir. 2014). You ask the same AI, "Does this case actually exist?" (It doesn't—I totally made it up, but the citation format looks official.) What will the AI say? How can you have confidence in it? If it says, "Yes, Dave, that's a real case," it's a lie that's nevertheless consistent with its previous work. If it says, "No, Dave, that's not a real case," then how can you depend on the legal validity of the brief it just generated? These aren't hypotheticals. This is actually happening.

So the question is not whether AI can or should be used for fact-checking. It's that AI can both generate and test content. However you use AI, it's prudent at this point not to get into a situation where the fox guards the henhouse.
 
For me, I use Google's Ai (the one on chrome), and it's wrong at least half of the time. What's most annoying is how confident it will give incorrect answers, and will sometimes even cite real sources but still be incorrect.

For example, as a test I started asking Google's AI about my old job and certain aspects about how things worked there in the area I specialized in, and it just made things up. The thing is, if I hadn't worked there and already known, I'm sure I would have been convinced it was correct.
 
Ryan Dancy, COO of board and card game company Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) is now the former COO after a LinkedIn post in which he stated that AI could design the company's games as well or better than human designers. He argued that there are almost no new ideas and human designers copy and adapt existing material anyway.

It exists because many many previous games exist, feed into the minds of designers, who produce new variants on those themes. People then apply risk capital against those ideas to see if there’s a product market fit. Sometimes there is, and sometimes there is not. (In fact, much more often than not).
Extremely occasionally (twice in my lifetime: D&D and Magic: the Gathering) a human has produced an all new form of gaming entertainment. Those moments are so rare and incandescent that they echo across decades.
Game publishing isn’t an industry of unique special ideas. It’s an industry about execution, marketing, and attention to detail. All things AIs are great at.”

Van Rootselaar is suspected of having shot and killed eight people in rural Tumbler Ridge on 12 February in one of the deadliest attacks in Canada's history.
According to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the story, "about a dozen staffers debated whether to take action on Van Rootselaar's posts."
Some had identified the suspect's usage of the AI tool as an indication of real world violence and encouraged leaders to alert authorities, the US outlet reported.
But, it said, leaders of the company decided not to do so.
OpenAI has said it will uphold its policy of alerting authorities only in cases of imminent risk because alerting them too broadly could cause unintended harm.
Clearly hindsight shows that authorities should have been alerted, whether real world violence was "imminent" or not.

This is something AI (not LLM) is good at, finding patterns in large datasets to indicate who may be a genuine threat, sadly of course it does require a large amount of data to be accumulated before they can start to detect such patterns.

I use it for rather trivial uses. I recently had it analyze some song lyrics. I had some trouble connecting verse 1 to verse 3 but Google AI was very creative. It always sounds so cheerful. When it talks to me, in my mind a C3PO voice comes out. A pharse I would not have known (English English) was debagged Goliath. Apparently the pants were pulled off.
To "debag Goliath" is a phrase primarily used in a literary or lyrical context, most notably in the song "Grass For Blades" by the Finnish progressive rock band Wigwam.

Hatzius said one major reason is that much of the equipment powering AI is imported. While U.S. companies are spending billions, importing chips and hardware offsets those investments in GDP calculations.

“A lot of the AI investment that we’re seeing in the U.S. adds to Taiwanese GDP, and it adds to Korean GDP but not really that much to U.S. GDP,” he said.

On top of that, there is currently no reliable way to accurately measure how AI use among businesses and consumers contributes to economic growth.

So far, many business leaders say AI hasn’t significantly improved productivity.

A recent survey of nearly 6,000 executives in the U.S., Europe, and Australia found that despite 70% of firms actively using AI, about 80% reported no impact on employment or productivity.
