Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Saturday that Democrats will not put up the necessary votes to advance a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security in the wake of immigration agents shooting and killing a man in Minneapolis... the DHS funding measure was expected to be packaged with the other legislation that funds key federal departments in hopes the Senate passes the measures together before the Jan. 30 deadline to fund the government.,,,,If the funding package does not pass the Senate, there will be another partial government shutdown.

There must be some mistake. I was repeatedly assured by people who were choosing to not vote that: “It doesn’t matter who’s president; they’re both bad.” Maybe we’re not seeing the wisdom?

Meanwhile, Democrat run Sanctuary Cities and States are REFUSING to cooperate with ICE, and they are actually encouraging Leftwing Agitators to unlawfully obstruct their operations to arrest the Worst of the Worst People! By doing this, Democrats are putting Illegal Alien Criminals over Taxpaying, Law-Abiding Citizens, and they have created dangerous circumstances for EVERYONE involved. Tragically, two American Citizens have lost their lives as a result of this Democrat ensued chaos.

I can understand the source of the cynicism here. (Especially the way many think the Democrats "caved in" during the first government shutdown.) But I think there are a few differences that might make this shutdown over DHS funding different (and potentially more effective) than the previous shutdown.

First of all, the people who would be most affected by the shutdown are the people Trump actually wants working (i.e. ICE agents). And as much as your average ICE recruit would love to shoot a minority in the back for free, they still need to worry about getting a paycheck. (how else are they going to send their kids to the Hitler Youth Summer camp?) Compare that to the previous government shutdown. Lots of people found themselves out of work for weeks. But, they were people that Trump probably LIKED seeing suffer. In other words, more collateral damage. Hard to bargain with Trump over that.

So this shutdown might have both the Democrats more willing to follow through, and the republicans more willing to negotiate.

Secondly, I think the connection between what the shutdown is about and the effects are a lot more clear. In the previous shutdown, Democrats were concerned about health care funding, and as a result, airports got shut down? That seems almost random. But here, the concern is "abuse by ICE gestapo agents". The Democrats are trying to address the issue by... shutting down funding for those ICE agents. Its a little clearer what is going on, and it might make the Democrats look better as a result.

Of course this is all contingent on the Democrats actually standing firm (again, something that might be easier to do than last time), and the Trump administration not being able to find the funds to pay for ICE in other parts of the budget (hard to do simply because of the huge budget involved.)
