Abortion Ban In South Dakota!

Maybe there was more to it than that, and if there is, please enlighten me, but a country that sends people to jail for exercising their right to free speech, cannot be called a 'Hotbed of Enlightenment'.

Wise of you not to rely on a brief mention in a German magazine. There is, of course.

(It's legalese, so bear with me)

§266

He, who publically or intentionally spreads to a larger circle statements or other messages, by whom a group of persons is threatened, insult (ED: very harsh version of "insult" - I can't find a proper English word) or degradates because of race, color, national or ethnic origin, belief or sexual orientation, is punishable by fine, detention or prison up to 2 years.

Pt.2.: When the sentence is measured, it shall be regarded as an increase of the sentence if the offense is characterized as propaganda.

He was imprisoned because of Stk 2. of §266.

Precisely like in the US, you can't say everything what you want, when you want it.

Do you have any comment on the crazy laws in the US?

Are people claiming that the US is a 'Hotbed of Enlightenment'?
Sorry, didn't see this.

They sure shouldn't point fingers at Denmark.

Sheesh....Oral sex is considered to be sodomy?? If that isn't an infringement of "freedom of speech", I don't know what is.... :D

IIRC, you were the person who initially indicated that Denmark was a hotbed of enlightenment. No one was 'pointing fingers', simply stating that Denmark had laws in place that would disqualify it as such.

The fact that the US also has silly laws, has no bearing on Denmark's silly laws.

ETA: BTW, oral sex is sodomy, by definition: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=sodomy

They sure shouldn't point fingers at Denmark.

No one is pointing fingers at Denamrk except insofar as asking you to back up your claim in post 54 that Denmark is a hotbed of enlightenment.

But I'm just an ignernt 'Merican, as evidenced by the fact that one of the fifty states of my country passed a stupid law. So what do I know?

How... enlightened.

Most of them are either untrue right from the beginning, repealed, misrepresented or mooted by subsequent legislation or court rulings. In fact, so few of them are real that even Snopes doesn't think it's worth the effort of debunking them individually. But feel free to put forward internet glurge as evidence in the future, too. Just so you know, there isn't really a boy with bag of leaves for a body and Jerry Mathers is alive.

I have absolutely no idea. Why don't you tell us? Discuss.
None? And yet you're encouraging the US to enter the 21st Century?

You really want to discuss abortion? Wow - either you are foolish or stupid.
Not with someone who has absolutely no idea, no.

But that still infringes on free speech. Everyone has different standards as to what is morally repugnant. Just because someone might find his opinions to be reprehensible, doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to express them.

Well, this thread is thoroughly derailed.

Looks like all that "solidarity with Denmark" stuff went out the window, too.

I don't think there are enough pro-life people here to sustain it, do you? If so I for one will apologize and duck out.

Looks like all that "solidarity with Denmark" stuff went out the window, too.
Nah, we still <3 Denmark. We just realize that it's a real country just like ours and Canada and Great Britain and stuff, not the magic wonderland of enlightenment compared to the rest of the world that CF makes it out to be.

I am not particularly interested in abortion. It is simply something we take for granted here. Unlike in your own country, we don't fear anti-abortionists.

Not with someone who has absolutely no idea, no.

I can understand why you drop that subject like a hot potato.

They're indeed crazy!

And your same source had crazy laws in Denmark as well! It's crazy!!!! (wow, I hate that smilie)

http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/international/denmark/

Oh, we do. But, just curious:

Before starting your car you are required to check lights, brakes, steering and honk your horn.

If your vehicle stalls and you leave it on the side of the road, you must mark the vehicle with a red, reflecting triangle.

If a horse drawn carriage is trying to pass a car and the horse becomes uneasy, the owner of the car is required to pull over and if necessary, cover the car.

Why are these law stupid?

No one is pointing fingers at Denamrk except insofar as asking you to back up your claim in post 54 that Denmark is a hotbed of enlightenment.

Which I did. The Muhammed cartoons have been all over the place. I don't see the same happening in the US.

But I'm just an ignernt 'Merican, as evidenced by the fact that one of the fifty states of my country passed a stupid law. So what do I know?

Only one? Want to rethink that one?

What does it being German magazine have to do with anything?

The further away you get, the more distorted it gets.

But that still infringes on free speech. Everyone has different standards as to what is morally repugnant. Just because someone might find his opinions to be reprehensible, doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to express them.

It isn't just a question of being reprehensible, it is also a question of threatening people.

Well, this thread is thoroughly derailed.

Looks like all that "solidarity with Denmark" stuff went out the window, too.

I think this is why:

Nah, we still <3 Denmark. We just realize that it's a real country just like ours and Canada and Great Britain and stuff, not the magic wonderland of enlightenment compared to the rest of the world that CF makes it out to be.

Where does all this hatred of yours come from, manny?

All of them are untrue? Oral sex is not considered sodomy in some states?
I said most. You said all, you liar.

I am not particularly interested in abortion.
Odd, that's what the thread is about.

It is simply something we take for granted here. Unlike in your own country, we don't fear anti-abortionists.
Really? You might want to have a word with your country's official website, which claims that "the ethical quandary behind the abortion debate is still volatile in Denmark."

Oh, and the answer to the question is that it is easier to get a 14th week abortion in the United States than in Denmark.

It isn't just a question of being reprehensible, it is also a question of threatening people.?

the law says illegal to threaten or insult or degrade

Where does all this hatred of yours come from, manny

where do you get a feeling of hatred from his last post? It seemed pretty harmless (and truthful) to me.

Which I did. The Muhammed cartoons have been all over the place. I don't see the same happening in the US.

Being better in one single respect does not make a country a 'hotbed of enlightenment' especially when counter examples can be provided where you are worse off.

Only one? Want to rethink that one?

Only one of the breadth and scope of the one that started this thread. But hey, I'm just an American and thus obviously posssed of a room-temperature IQ, so I am probably wrong. We are all a bunch of fundy loonies over here, every man, woman and child among us.

I said most. You said all, you liar.

I asked if all of them were untrue. I didn't say you claimed they were.

Am I a liar for asking you a question? Just yes or no, please.

Odd, that's what the thread is about.

As you can see, I responded to something else. Do you have a problem with that?

Really? You might want to have a word with your country's official website, which claims that "the ethical quandary behind the abortion debate is still volatile in Denmark."

I think you should read your own source again. Really.

Again: No, we don't fear anti-abortionists.

Oh, and the answer to the question is that it is easier to get a 14th week abortion in the United States than in Denmark.

In all states? What is your point?

the law says illegal to threaten or insult or degrade

I translated that, yes.

where do you get a feeling of hatred from his last post? It seemed pretty harmless (and truthful) to me.

It isn't merely from his last post. Manny has a history of hating me, even to the point of working hard to prevent me from entering the US.

He failed, of course. That, I suspect, adds to his venom.

Being better in one single respect does not make a country a 'hotbed of enlightenment' especially when counter examples can be provided where you are worse off.

We are certainly not "worse off". Perhaps it takes a brief visit to Denmark to persuade you? It sure helps visiting - or, if possible, living there - to get a grip on how life in a country is like.

I'm not saying that. Are you?

this thread is almost a carbon copy of the Will and Grace censorship thread. Something in America is seen as wrong. Denmark is proclaimed as being more with the times in regards to these issues (free speech, abortion rights) by Claus. 5-10 pages of bickering back and forth ensue. The original message is lost.

Fun!

I would if I could. However, the point is that Denmark, like the US, Canada, The Dominican Republic and roughly about...oooohhhhh....every other country on the face of the planet, is run by people. People sometimes make stupid decisions. Thus Denmark is no worse off than the US, enlightnment-wise, no better either, as examples can be shown where your countries laws are less 'enlightened' than ours, and some where they are more. I doubt I could be jailed for saying bad things about the Turks over here, for example.

I'm not saying that. Are you?

It's the impression you are giving. Whether that's intentional or not, only you know.

It's the impression you are giving. Whether that's intentional or not, only you know.

Well, I've made it clear that this is not the impression I am intending on giving.

Now, what? Do we still claim that I am wrong, so the thread can continue forever and ever?

Time will tell... ;)
