I disagree, after all Einstein was famously a patent clerk when he started revolutionising physics, but it should be people who understand what they're arguing against and present honest evidence to back up their arguement.

Although I too disagree with @alfaniner on this, and it is certainly true that Einstein was a patent clerk when he started to revolutionize physics, it is also true that Einstein was already a scientist when he became a patent clerk.

In 1900, Einstein completed a program of study in mathematics and physics that qualified him to teach those subjects. As best I can tell, that was substantially equivalent to a modern BS degree, and it was awarded by the school that is now known as ETH Zurich and proudly acknowledges Einstein as an alumnus. While employed full time at the patent office, Einstein completed his PhD (in 1905) at the University of Zurich, which is another prestigious university that proudly acknowledges Einstein as an alumnus. Einstein's employment at the patent office did not end until 1909, four years after his annus mirabilis.

The bit about Einstien was frippery TBH, I know the golden age of the amature scientist is long gone, but my point was just that what is important is less how someone is designated (After all one can be a scientist and competent in one field but still ignorant or even a full on crank in another) but rather understanding of the subject under consideration and willingness and ability to bring evidence to support your position.

It's only correct if you think in a different frame from Vance, I think. If you disagree with a scientific finding, you argue about that finding. The point of view of people like Vance is that there is a monolithic thing called "science," and if you see something you disagree with, that means that science is wrong.

I meant "other people familiar with the scientific method". Not necessarily Ph.Ds and such.
