Wow, UK has lost freedom of speech

I have been called many terrible things.

"Dirty Jew".

"White trash".

None of these deserved prison OR a fine.

Why? Cuz its just words. Words cannot hurt me unless I choose to let them.

Yes, its better we educate people to be more tolerant and less hateful, than arrest people and have big government punish them. We don't need that.

If we let big government punish speech, my speech will be next. Thats always how it goes. Just look how Trump had jumped on the bandwagon of censoring speech.

You're getting confused. The MAGA position is that the UK has lost freedom of speech, not the USA.

I'm trying to make a point, that even though terrible things have been said against me, that really hurt my feelings, I think it's more important that such speech be legal, then for us to allow government to get in the business of punishing speech. In the USA or the UK or anywhere else.

Herc, we are not talking about name calling. We are talking about hate speech. Do you understand the difference? Do you understand that no one is suggesting that we criminalize name calling?

Hate speech can include name calling, such as "dirty Jew" or "Christ killer" or "cheap Jew".

It *can*, but the three examples you picked are excessively weak and probably wouldn't constitute hate speech in many contexts.

It seems you didn't understand the question though. I asked if you understood the difference, and if you understood that no one here is suggesting name calling should be criminalized. Do you understand that? If so, why are you presenting silly strawmen as a response?

There is NO context, NONE whatsoever, in which calling a Jewish person a "christ-killer" or a "dirty jew", or a "cheap jew", is not hate speech.

Really learning a lot about the UK today. Huh.

Sure there is. Hate speech is designed, by nature, to stir up hate, and usually violence against its target, or at the very least to violate their rights inhumanely. Name calling is an expression of ridicule or contempt. Contempt and hate are not the same thing. Do you understand that?

Since we weren't talking about the UK today, I guess we can chalk that up to your global lack of comprehension?

Sure there is....

No, there is NOT. Its always hate speech. Not sure what you would accomplish by denying this.

But I'll take your bait. Give us some examples where such hateful bigoted speech, is not hate speech.

Make up your mind. Earlier you were claiming that these were mere "teasing" (your post #496).

You are right. Hate speech is not mere teasing. But that doesn't mean it should be criminal.

Only hate speech that includes a threat of violence should be criminal.

It's nice you think that. At the moment the majority of voters in most EU countries and the UK think it should be.

Again, you keep ignoring that decades of free hate speech led the way to the nazi persecution of Jews. Not being able to claim all adherents of a faith are secretly raping babies in hidden rites is a sacrifice I'm willing to make to prevent a repeat of the Holocaust.
The relentless lies about immigrant caravans, immigrants raping good Christian women etc have helped Trump to power, and look what is happening to your vaunted free speech in the US now.

Free Speech didn't lead to the Holocaust. That's a pretty silly argument.
