There's actually a term for it: nutpicking. You comb through social media and find a radical opinion from some dude with 6 followers and portray it as "this is what they all think!!!".

The "left" doesn't need to do it very often because Republican leaders often spew out enough bile.

I do think the bottom line is OTT, but the rest of it certainly rings true. I certainly don't believe I have changed my potilical viewpoint, at least not in the last 50 years. I am centre left with a few conservative viewpoints on specific issues (transgenderism and illegal immigration), but feel like the people to my left have been moving more left in the last decade. I still vote centre left (so Labour in NZ and if I was American, then Democrat) and would never ever vote for any conservative party ( so not National in NZ, not Republican if I was American).
