There's nothing about slavery in the first clip. Also, Kirk says blacks were "better" in the 1940s, not "better off," and it's not clear what he means by that. It seems like he might mean that black Americans committed fewer crimes.

The second quotation is a blatant misquotation. Kirk doesn't say "black women." He names four particular black women whom he says proudly admit to having gotten into college via affirmative action, and claims they don't have the brainpower to be taken seriously. And I happen to agree with him about two of them (and disagree with him about the other two).

There's plenty for anyone who isn't a member of MAGA to criticize about Kirk's actual views without making stuff up.

I like how your cleaned up version of what Kirk said is that Black Americans were "better" when they were being oppressed, tortured, and murdered during the Jim Crow era and the overt racism was about four particular Black women instead of all Black women.

And apparently in your mind, this is somehow redeeming.

Of course they were "better" then (in the view of the racist right). They weren't so uppity! All true republicans hate it when minorities stand up for themselves.

A couple of people have mentioned the Reichstag fire. I think the assassinations of Wilhelm GustloffWP, founder of the Swiss Nazi party, and Ernst vom RathWP, a Nazi diplomat, by Jews, are more on point. The latter precipitated the KristallnachtWP pogrom. Incidentally, Wilhelm Gustloff's name will be familiar to those following the MS Estonia thread.

I think Trump might try to use this as an excuse to try to weaken civil liberties, but I don't see him attempting any massive increase in executive power like Hitler did after the Reichstag fire, for a variety of reasons.

As I've mentioned in other threads, I think comparing Trump to Hitler is giving Trump way too much credit. I realized recently whom I think Trump reminds me of: Ferdinand MarcosWP, corrupt long-time dictator of the Philippines.
