Trump's Second Term

Why is an Energy Secretary trying to "cure cancer?" You don't have to be crazy to work for trump but it sure helps.

With the drastic cuts they've made to NIH funding, there's not really anyone else to do it.
(The latest issue of Skeptical inquirer had an article about it, so it was fresh in my mind.)

I'm just glad I (a) never had children and (b) am old enough that I'm unlikely to live to see the worst of it.
That's harsh. We are in a new wave of far-right populism gaining votes, and the climate crisis is, well, a crisis, but we'll solve the latter and survive the former. Eventually we'll all look like Brazillians anway, and there will be nothing left for racists to argue over. Sure, they'll find some other minority group to use as scapegoats (although both trans and gay people will probably be normalized enough by then that it won't be them, but they'll come up with something).

Other than that, in countless ways we're doing way better than only 50-100 years ago. Certain history lessons in I'm Starting to Worry About the Black Box of Doom drove that home for me. Humanity is in for some hard times, but in the long run we'll be fine.

Do we know who did the attack? There seems an assumption it was the US navy, but i think the CIA have armed drones capable of such an attack? The CIA may be more willing to carry out criminal acts than the navy..
I think that you overestimate the military's resistance to carrying out pointedly illegal acts.

On the subject of those killings, though, I'm reminded again of animals ripping apart humans in the Colosseum to the cheers of the watchers and lynching parties where a bunch of people had a grand ole time around the hanging corpse of a black man.

Okay Donny. Now you've prewarned us not to trust or believe them, can we finally see the Epstein Files?

Then, are you going to show us the Comey, Obama And Biden Made Up The Epstein Files Files?

I mean, you have evidence of this, right?

Right?

It's just like the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, after all. Confirmed by lots of credible sources on all sides except for those pointedly running interference for Trump.

So much for 2nd Amendment. It will soon happen to other groups as well.

The right wing perversion of 2nd Amendment was never actually a principled stance for those behind it, so this statement feels a little off.

However, banning people from possessing guns if they suffer from untreated mental illness isn't a bad idea.

Depends on the mental illness. There are obviously a few that increase risks, but the large majority don't. Overall, there's no clear link between mental illness and violence. Quite frankly, the mentally ill get scapegoated quite a lot on this issue and it just makes dealing with the actual problems all the harder when one also faces caricatures in the way. Very often, it's coming from the right, of course, and is brazenly in bad faith. They blame violence on mental illness and then work to cut support for the mentally ill over and over and over. The right is lying and/or they are actively engaged in working to increase the violence. The latter applies even if their actual goals are a bit different and they simply don't care about what they believe to be the deadly side effects of their actions.

That the Trump Admin is considering banning guns from transfolk.
Several sources seem to disagree with you.

Trump DOJ is looking at ways to ban transgender Americans from owning guns, sources say

In the wake of the Minneapolis Catholic church shooting, senior Justice Department officials are weighing proposals to limit transgender people’s right to possess firearms, according to two officials familiar with the internal discussions.

The talks, described as preliminary in nature, appear to build on an idea that has gained some currency in conservative media since the Minneapolis shooting that killed two children and injured 21, most of them children, at Annunciation Catholic Church, an attack that police say was carried out by a 23-year-old transgender woman.

Such a move would represent a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s fight against the rights of transgender Americans.

So did several more . . .

Senior Justice Department officials have held internal deliberations in recent days over potentially issuing a rule that could restrict transgender individuals from being able to own firearms, two officials familiar with the discussions confirmed Thursday to ABC News.

The policy discussions, which are believed to be in their early stages and driven in part by chatter in right-wing media, follow last week's Minneapolis Catholic church shooting that the FBI has said was carried out by a transgender woman.

Such a proposal could face significant pushback not only from civil rights groups but from gun rights organizations, which have historically been resistant to the issuance of any regulations restricting people's access to firearms.

And . . .

The Department of Justice is reportedly considering a proposal to restrict transgender Americans from possessing firearms, marking a dramatic reversal of the Trump administration’s pledges to preserve Second Amendment rights while escalating the president’s attacks against trans Americans.

The proposal, according to CNN, comes in the wake of a mass shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic church allegedly committed by a 23-year-old trans woman, which has fueled conspiracy theories and right-wing outrage baselessly alleging trans people are predisposed to commit violence.

Since taking office, Donald Trump has issued a series of directives targeting trans Americans, including an executive order that erases federal recognition of trans people and other measures that restrict gender-affirming healthcare and ban trans athletes from competing in women’s sports.
