ETA: When I wrote the following, I was quite confused. Leavitt's comment had to do with Trump's firing of the CDC director, not with his alleged firing of Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook.
I apologize for my error, but will not edit what follows. You might think I should strike out the part where I accuse Leavitt of lying, but
the US Senate voted in July 2025 to approve Susan Monarez's appointment as CDC director, so Leavitt is indeed lying about that.
Reporter: On the firing of the CDC director.. What specifically did she do wrong?
Leavitt:
This woman has never received a vote in her life and the president has the authority to fire those who are not aligned with his mission
Leavitt is lying, of course. Lisa Cook's appointment to the Federal Reserve's Board of Governors was approved by
a vote in the Senate "for a term of fourteen years from February 1, 2024".
As a member of that board, Cook can only be fired for cause. That fact was affirmed by the Supreme Court just last May (see below). Not being aligned with the president's mission has never been recognized as a legitimate cause for firing any member of the Federal Reserve Board. That's why the alleged cause cited by the White House (as opposed to Leavitt) is a couple of check boxes on applications for mortgages that were paid off long ago. Whether any court will agree with the White House remains to be seen.
(In May, when the Supreme Court allowed Trump to fire members of the National Labor Relations Board (thereby overturning longstanding Supreme Court precedent), the Court specifically said their reasoning (such as it was) would not apply to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. In other words, the Supreme Court has said Trump cannot fire Cook just because she is not aligned with his mission.)
(Edited to add link and to add this link to
Cook's request for an emergency hearing on her motion for a temporary restraining order.)
