I understand that. The people around here also do a lot of bow hunting. Seems as if a trip in the woods isn't worthwhile unless they can kill something.

To be fair, killing something is a basic evolutionary function of every carnivore and omnivore. Why hate on humans doing exactly what they evolved to do?
 
If sustainable fuel (as opposed to EVs) can get more mileage out of the existing 1.5 billion cars in the world, I'm not going to object to it.

I don't hate them. I think it's quite alright to hunt for food. I grew up hunting and fishing with my father. It's killing for sport I don't like. But even then I don't hate the hunters.

I'm not objecting to it, I just think it's a lot of development to very little purpose. I don't know of anyone as yet who is suggesting that existing ICE cars should not be able to go on burning petrol and diesel until they come to the end of their natural lives. So in that scenario, which is what we have at present, "sustainable fuel" isn't going to get any more mileage out of them. It's possible that in future there might be moves to phase out petrol and diesel and keep the remaining ICE cars going on something else, but considering that most ICE cars are dead by the age of 15-20, I'd question how necessary this is. Personally I'd prefer to see the end of new ones being manufactured come sooner than is being proposed. If you have requirements that an EV isn't suitable for now, and you need a replacement vehicle, get a used one. I think it's unconscionable to be bringing new ICE cars into the world now. Once no new ICE are being manufactured (and I include the ridiculous hybrid things in that) then the problem will be well on the way to solving itself.

Just as a little extra wrinkle, I was away from home for two weeks. How do you think I was able to keep the e-bike charged up all that time?

Chance would be a fine thing. Not legal here. I'd be pretty happy with 500 watts actually, and TBH the 250 watts we are allowed does just fine a lot of the time.

You could actually recharge another car that way using a granny charger. Slow, but you could give it enough to get to the next charger if it wasn't far. As far as the bike goes, filling that battery is a rounding error for the car.

Yesterday I saw a couple of kids being a bit reckless on off road e-motorcycles. It was amazing how fast they were.
 
I would just like to be able to get up steeper gradients. The bikes are also limited so that the assist cuts out if you exceed 15.5 mph, so I don't really know what the problem would be.

Actually , re-engagement with the weight loss thread would be the most practical method of achieving the goal.

Mrs Don is jealous, her Fiat 500 doesn't have that capability - and likely couldn't carry her bike either.
