He's "a legend" in that he's only very distantly connected to reality.

He thought he had "bent Putin to his will" but now that's turning out to be so much smoke. He got allied leaders together to show everyone what a clever boy he'd been and it was a waste of everyone's time because Moscow is now backpedalling furiously as Putin never agreed to whatever Trump thinks he did.

This is what you get when an increasingly senile narcissist thinks diplomacy is having a chat in the back of his limo with no witnesses to what was said. Trump struggles at the best of times to remember whatever did happen without substituting thoughts of things he wanted to have happened.

He's a liability as far as I'm concerned. Not an actual moron, but functionally indistinguishable.

The only explanation I can conceive for this kind of self demeaning discourse is :

"The president has this uncanny ability to fire people in his entourage he feels are not sycophantic enough. I've never seen anyone I was in such need to flatter all the time about anything he does or says in fear of being given the sack, and I've been around some nasty characters before. He's giving me the chills as far as I'm concerned"

This seems to be the way the cult works. It's adherents compete and jostle for position with their increasingly nauseating obsequious flattery. It's not that whoever sings the praises of the dear leader to the most absurd degree is the winner of anything concrete. They just seem to love trying to worship harder than each other.

Somewhat more seriously though, it does serve a purpose. It reassures the MAGA crowd that, however things may look, some confident guy on TV says actually everything's going great.

Every mis-step was really a masterstroke in some way you just can't see. Each flip-flop on policy was a brilliant ruse and fully preplanned. The Dear Leader moves in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform. Keep the faith. He wasn't lying he was joking. OK he wasn't joking and it's a brilliant idea and we should do that, I've always said we should do that. He has infallible instincts for basically everything and when all the experts say he's wrong just remember that time all the experts were wrong. Okay you don't remember when all the experts were wrong but that's because umm the experts all go to a different school just trust me they were totally wrong. Worship the golden horses arse. Worship harder or the magic might not happen. Then it would be your fault.

It's purely performative, like the flag pins. Instead of "Everyone look at me!! Look at how patriotic I am!! I'm ten times as patriotic as you are!!", it's "Everyone look at me!! Look at how much I love the Emperor!! I love the Emperor ten times as much as you do!!"
One might almost say it's ... "virtue signaling". Except the opposite of "virtue". "Vice signaling"?

You have to remember that Trump ended all these wars without a ceasefire, so the mere fact that hostilities are continuing doesn't mean a war hasn't been stopped.
