Cuomo defeated in NYC Democratic Mayoral Primary

OK so let's move on. One of the issues that has unfortunately become relevant in the Mamdani campaign is the suggestion by some that he be denaturalized and deported. The President of the United States, who has already shown his willingness to use Federal power to impose his policy and will, has made the threat explicitly, and other Republicans have supported it. Two very simple questions regarding this could be addressed by someone purporting to have an interest in the campaign and its significance.

The first is whether one believes it is reasonable to consider such a move in the circumstances.

The second is whether one believes it is in keeping with American democratic values for his opponents to keep silent on the question.

I have made it clear, I think, that I consider the first part to be an outrage and a symptom of anti-democratic tyranny, and the second a short-sighted lack of courage that makes his opponents useful idiots in the continuing undermining of democratic government.

I should add, since I have not been reading the local accounts in detail, that it's possible I have missed some utterance by his opponents on this issue, and if some such statements have occurred, I apologize in advance for missing them. So far all I've seen is from people not involved in the actual campaign.

How about you, Hercules? Any thoughts?

Ah, the old favourite of argument by assertion followed by not wanting to talk about it any more.

Sir Robin would be proud. ;)
I agreed to stop talking about the issue, and then other folks baited me and brought it up again.

So once again lets stop talking about this tired dead horse, and focus on the actual campaign, which is at least somewhat relevant to the OP.

I think it's outrageous for a president to even talk about a city election. Doesn't he have more important things to be doing? I don't like presidents acting like kings, or even like heads of their political party. A city's mayor is that city's business and nobody else's.

What he said was "most college applications don't have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background." So although he did check that box, it's not the only one he checked. It's not entirely clear whether there was a box he could have checked which would have been closer.

It does seem to have been a poor decision, but somehow its current proportion seems excessive.
Okay, that's just adorable. He wasn't cynically playing the system. He sincerely believed that the purpose of those checkboxes was to "capture the fullness" of his background.

The people scanning those checkboxes care about simplicity, not fullness. Checking more boxes probably makes you seem more complicated and therefore less appealing, not more fully understood. The people that care about fullness of background will be reading your application letter and extracurriculars, not your race/color/ethnicity checkboxes.

Wasn't his application rejected anyway? If so, it's probably because some low-level pencil-pusher thought he was playing silly buggers with the checkboxes.

Maybe it's this naive optimism that makes him so electable. "Checking two boxes will give a fuller understanding of my background." "I'll just order the NYPD to execute ICC warrants." "City-managed food stores. How hard could it be?"

Anyways, I read a Latino VIP has endorsed Momdani. He will likely win if the momentum keeps up. NYC politics has changed.

And the MAGA tactic of deliberately misspelling his name in the mistaken belief that it's some kind of slick wordplay is repeated.

Not MAGA at all, no siree.
Why are you sooooo hyper obsessed with the spelling of this guy's name? The OP seems to have misspelled his name. Who cares. Its not relevant to the discussion. Move on.

Has it occurred to anyone that they may be overthinking this?

A 17 year old filled out an application form and ticked the boxes he thought best described him. Years later, political enemies somehow unearth this trivial bit of information and decide they can spin a disagreement with the kid's tickbox choices into a harmful conspiracy theory.

Now you're actually suggesting a suspicion that his application might have been rejected because some "low-level pencil-pusher" disagreed with the way he'd interpreted their questionnaire. Seriously?

I wish I was living in a world where this is worth so much attention at the expense of everything else
I alluded to that, directly with Herc. But no, obviously this nit-picking about race/culture/ethnicity about the candidate who delivered a great upside your head to the Repugs and the Dem establishment isn't worth discussing. Oh well.
