Trump's Second Term

It's all about the corruption. Musk getting government contracts for Tesla, and cancelling other competitors'. Money going to Trump via memecoin, in return for favours. Many of the other things are just distractions to keep the press busy and his supporters amused.

There's a major article on the Trump family and corruption in today's Observer...

How the US president and his clan ushered in a new golden age of corruption

Someone on Twitter once wrote, "I love that in Norway we say Kjære vakre vene, which translates to dear, beautiful, and kind, but really means "Are you a ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ moron?", and I think that's beautful!"

I can never work out anymore when they're actually being stupid themselves or just counting on the cult to be as stupid as they are.
In the Southern US, I think "bless their heart" works much the same.

I always felt sorry for the intelligence operatives who have to listen to Trump 24/7 through his many compromised devices and locations

Also, she's from the same state as I am, New Hampshire. It angers and distresses me greatly that New Hampshire can produce people who are such incredibly stupid ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊!

Her, not me.
[Vermonta] New Hampsha! Time to blow up a couple of bridges. What's that motto again? Live free or else? Let Freedom die? Something like that. [/Vermonta]

Russel Vogt:
Part 3:
Vought’s ideology is rooted in Christian nationalism.
He’s called for a “biblical worldview” in government.
That means:
→ Control education
→ Weaken civil rights enforcement
→ Roll back religious freedom unless it's Christian

This isn’t a theoretical threat.
Vought is already implementing parts of Project 2025 under Trump’s current administration—reorganizing agencies, vetting staff, and reshaping institutions from the inside.

She's not stupid. She knows exactly what she's doing. She knows full well that little if anything she says is factually true. Her job is to maintain the Trump narrative at all costs. She counts on her audience being stupid, and to keep supporting Trump policies no matter what the facts. She has to think on her feet to give a natural-sounding (albeit bogus) answer to any question that taps into one of the Trump talking points: immigrants, DEI, Joe Biden, etc. It can be argued that it takes a fair amount of intelligence to so effortlessly and convincingly lie in response to every question.

I feel your pain. I'm from real Hampshire and you should see some of the Tories elected there..😡

These people are so ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ stupid.
Well, there are two possible levels of stupid here.

1) Nobody had actually told Leavitt why the librarian had been fired, so she just decided to wing it by invoking the trusty old kneejerk "DEI!" meme, coupled with what she remembered hearing about other libraries, children, and "inappropriate books."

2) Somebody had told her, and those were the actual reasons.

Either way, yeah, pretty ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ stupid, the only difference being between whether the stupidity was at the policymaking or the presentation level. And that's what happens when this branch of government is headed by a guy whose whole approach is to treat both levels as elements of entertainment in an ongoing reality-TV show. I can't watch Trump at his little EO signing ceremonies, surrounded by TV cameras and microphones, and making his inane remarks as if he thinks he's the witty host every such show needs, without thinking that those cameras are microphones are the point. I won't say that such a president is just what a TV-obsessed nation like ours deserves, but I do think it's what that sort of nation was inevitably going to get when so large a part of it can't accept or won't take the trouble to understand anything more complicated than what entertains them .

The only time anyone ever hears about New Hampshire is during the Election - because they get the first votes in, I think. Otherwise there is never anything about it in the news.

I disagree. I'm certain that she has no idea what the Library of Congress does, nor most of the other government agencies she makes up crap about. Parrots talk a good game, but they have no idea what they're talking about.

What really really bothers me is that these various trump officials and supporters are never held to account. I can just hear the late Joe Lehrer of the PBS MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour asking Leavitt:
  • Now Ms. Leavitt, you stated that the former Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden was dismissed in part for allowing books in the library that were "inappropriate for children?"
  • In fact, the Library of Congress has over 34 million books, does it not? Including copies of every book submitted for copyright registration?
  • That the Library of Congress is not a 'lending library' where children can borrow books?
But Karoline Leavitt will not be asked those questions because she will not allow herself to be in an interview where those questions might be asked. How do they get away with this? How are they able to lie and lie with seeming impunity?

Because they campaigned on this? The whole 'no fact checking!' thing?
And the US voters in majority go with this.
The result of years of destroying education and the concurrent losing the ability to critically think and look outside the bubble.

And there's no real doubt that this destruction of education has been intentional for more than 40 years. They know that people with more education are less likely to vote Republican, just as people with more education are less likely to be religious. These two things go hand-in-hand and are due to the lack of ability to think critically.

Well, there's also stupid option 3) Somebody had told her, and those *weren't* the actual reasons, but she misunderstood and/or confabulated what she wanted to hear. Or 4) Somebody had told her, but that somebody was as stupid as she is, and got the reasons wrong themselves.

I'm assuming the reason we're not considering just flat-out lying is because that would be mendacity, rather than stupid?
