Science versus the Death Penalty

Seriously?

Presumably you are one of those honorable Greeks who would just drink the hemlock after the verdict:rolleyes:.
What is the point of life, is there is no enjoyment left in it? I don't believe in life just for the sake of being alive. Life is meant to be enjoyed. When it is not possible to ever have any meaningful enjoyment to life anymore, then it is over for me.

Do you think that only nice people like you (avatar aside:p) can enjoy life? I'll bet a lot of pedophiles, rapists and torturers do too.

First...nice person like me? You obviously don't know me very well. ;)

Second...I'm not following you. I know those people enjoy life. I'm not sure how that relates to the conversation.

Oh...I'm not sure if I was clear or not, but I am for the death penalty. Don't mistake the stuff I said about MY preferences earlier for being against the death penalty. Because I am for it.

Oh I hear your inuendos from time to time. Probably a cool way to get chicks, but I'm not one.

As to nice or not, I've read enough to think that you have a civil head. Whatever your kinks are, I'm sure you present them in a civil manner.:D

As to the death penalty, you did catch my misunderstanding, and caught me by surprise. I'm against it.

For what it's worth, and not wanting to start the one hundredth thread on the subject, I'll say why.

1: Doesn't prevent crime.
2: Costs more than life.
3: Offers no reversal in a fallible world.
4: Offers no opportunity for society to say that it doesn't take life when it doesn't have to.

On the other hand, if our system allowed the victim, or victim's family, to pull the trigger I might change my mind:boggled:. Kind of like they do in Saudi.

Interesting. I've thought long and hard on this one in recent times. I have a family and so I think I have a responsibility to them that transcends my own enjoyment. But I think you otherwise raise a very valid point. However it is not something that many of us casually choose. When push comes to shove many endure unbelievable cruelty and pain (see the death marches in WWII, the Jews who struggled intolerable cruelty and inhumanity at the hand of the Nazis, etc.

When I was growing up I took a very dim view of hedonism. Probably due to religious indoctrination. That view is changing. Do you consider yourself a hedonist?

Do you consider yourself a hedonist?
Is there a phrase in the English language that is stronger than HELL F***ING YEAH!!!!!!!!?
;)

Note that seeking pleasure does not mean that I am a shallow person. There are all sorts of ways to seek pleasure. I have some very deep and meaningful friendships that give me great pleasure. I think too often people confuse "hedonist" with "seeking gratuitous physical pleasure". I do that, too. But there is much more to seeking pleasure than that. I get great pleasure out of my career. And my home. My car. My hobbies. My pet. Friends. Girlfriends.

I'm not shallow. But my life certainly is about enjoyment.

I'm going to take that as a yes. :)

Agreed and this is part of the reason I used to take a dim view of hedonism. It is obviously a misconception that hendonist are shallow and self centered. Though clearly some are.

(emphasis mine) We've been down this road before. ;)

Seriously though, good post. Thanks.
