Trump's Second Term

I'll predict then: Trump shot and killed by one of his inner circle when he decides to make it illegal to make fun of him. The military will fracture as it did in 1861 when ordered to invade Canada. Worldwide recession. Russo-Ukrainian war continues with extensive European support for the good guys. Extensive protests, highway blockage, walk outs, as social support systems shut down. Attempt to force religion participation on all Americans - civil war between different religious sect over what religion it will be, Removal of retirement pay for military and government workers who show up on Democratic voter rolls. Deportation of Trump critics. New pledge of allegiance to Trump from 1st grade to college. Ending of all future elections as unnecessary. Establishment of an oligarchy with the rich being the nobility and Trump and family the royalty, history rewritten

Thank you for contributing. Bravo.

Please forgive my ignorance on the subject of tariffs and possible results from them. I admit I don’t know as much as I should because as a young man I just didn’t care what happened politically and it has come back to bite me.
I am in no way a Don supporter and these are real questions that have occurred to me in the last month: Is it possible that these tariffs
(however remotely) will actually do what the administration says they will do? Can the US economy survive this brutal slaughter and actually come out better as a result? Will the US ever return to its prominence on the world stage? From what my limited knowledge tells me, unfortunately, the answer is no.

And now the vultures are swooping in to pick over the bodies. Blue Light Specials throughout the store!

I thought about doing that myself but then I did the math. The "buy low" advantage here only works if you have massive amounts of money to invest. While it's true buying my regular index fund shares now would be cheaper than it would have been last week, the difference is miniscule at the amounts I'm capable of buying.

It really is a game for millionaires and above. Thousandaires needn't bother.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's almost as if Donnie Diapers crashed things on purpose.

There may be individual cases, and niche industries, where tariffs will bring jobs (or at least manufacturing - there will likely be few jobs due to automation) back to the US as companies move production back to the US. To bring a significant proportion of manufacturing back to the US would require trillions of dollars of investment and I don't see companies being prepared to do that because they won't be able to export (thanks to reciprocal tariffs and the fact that they won't be price competitive in the global market) and in any case, Trump could change his mind tomorrow.

Funnily enough, protecting niche industries is one of the ways that tariffs can usefully be used - as opposed to the current indiscriminate tariffs.

This would require the rest of the world to believe:

- That this madness will end
- That the rest of the world will firmly come to believe that the USA will not, again, select and elect a russian asset/◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ moron/wannabe emperor.

I can't see either happening. The USA will likely become isolationist and the rest of the world will carry on without it.

I'm a small but regular investor, so take comfort from pound-cost averaging at times like this.

President Trump on Monday issued a new ultimatum to China to rescind its retaliatory tariffs on the United States, or face additional tariffs of 50 percent beginning Wednesday.

I'm not sure that is going to have the effect Trump hopes for. "If you don't cave into my demands I'll impose more tariffs. If you do, well, I might sign an agreement with you, just as I did with Mexico and Canada in my last presidency, only to rip it up later"

the manufacturing the us already does is highly automated and efficient. the labor intensive stuff that can’t be automated efficiently was shipped out years ago.

you have to realize you can automate certain processes and only after you understand them well and the equipment to do it exists. this is not the case for a lot of stuff.
