FBI investigates Michigan mosque attacks

FBI officials are working with local law enforcement agencies to investigate attacks on a Muslim mosque in Hamtramck, Michigan.

An incident Sunday is the most recent in a spate of assaults on Islamic individuals and places of worship in the Detroit area.

A group of boys around the age of 15 threw shoes at mosque members while they were praying, said Abdul Motlib, president of the Al-Islah Islamic Center.

It seems interesting to me that throwing shoes is a Muslim insult - something that would probably be lost to your average American teenager. I suppose those who grow up around Islamic communities would be able to pick up on the symbolism, though it does still strike me as a bit odd.

Maybe I'm totally wrong about this, but it seems to me rather likely that the shoe-throwers are themselves middle eastern, since shoe-throwing is a common insult there, while it isn't in the USA.

I mean, it's hard for me to imagine an American Skinhead deciding to take out his anger at Muslims using this method.

The whole thing is rather puzzling.

Well, I don't want to interfere with your superb reasoning here, detective Columbo, but this mystery probably isn't all that perplexing.

If you know anything about Islamic prayer ritual, you know Muslims take off their shoes before entering the Mosque. Do you know what this means? It means there are lots and lots of shoes outside the entrance to the prayer area. Gosh, so the shoes... they're handy -- they're right there -- within throwing range of the faithful. "Hard to imagine"? Of course, this is probably why it's good to (once in your life) go to Mosque and actually learn about (and from) "the Other."

Do you tell your arab/muslim co-teachers and muslims that you are at war with thier religion and that because of thier religion they are not acceptable candidates for moving to europe?
