Trump's Second Term

Canadian poster, a whole thread:

I think, even my Canadian standards, the lady is pretty far to the left.
And why is Canadian media much different then US media?
Don't coporations own most Canadian media also?

There's a reason that Japan has the 'deal'. After the war the USA wrote their constitution that says they have to host US bases and can't have any more than a token defence force.

I wonder what events resulted in that arrangement?
Meanwhile...
New Zealand has fired its most senior envoy to the United Kingdom over remarks that questioned US President Donald Trump's grasp of history.

As an ex soldier in the US Army, Hegseth is an idiot who will probably get a lot of grunts killed with his macho BS.
When I was in the US Army put a lot of stress on how stupid macho behavior will get you killed in combat.
As of our sergeants said: 'Rambo would not last one minute in a real firefight with the stupid crap he does in that movie".

US plans to close European consulates and cut state department workforce
The US state department is preparing to shut down a number of consulates that are mainly in western Europe in the coming months and looking to reduce its workforce globally, multiple US officials said on Thursday.

Reading through parts of that made me cringe.

Media bias and ownership issues can be quite complex, but if you spend endless time harping on "media ownership" as some sort of root cause, I think you're lost me.

Yes, corporations own most of Canada's media.... our biggest broadcast network is CTV, our newspapers are privately owned, etc.

I think there are a couple of differences though:
- Canadian society (as a whole) is further to the political left than the United States. This means that the media owners, workers, etc. are probably going to take a more liberal view in the news coverage (partly because that's probably what the audience wants, partly because of their own preferences)
- We have the CBC here (a.k.a. the mother-corp, which is a publicly owned broadcaster). Its not the most popular network, but its still more significant (relative to the size of our population) than things like NPR and PBS are in the United States
- Corporations may own our media here, but ultimately the owner is the 'shareholder' (i.e. no single owner controlling things.). We don't seem to have the equivalent of a Rupert Murdoch here, who is able to almost single-handedly influence public discourse through near complete control of media outlets like Fox News. (We did have Conrad Black, who had significant influence here in Canada, but he has been out of the publishing business for years)

Idiot, sure. Anti-semite ? How ? He supporting Israel dearly, and I haven't heard a word aimed at Jews from him. Considering he slanders basically everyone, I wouldn't be surprised if he secretly was a Jew.

Trump has also played bigtime to Evangelical Christians. Of course he had no relgiious beliefs of any time before he ran for President...................

Also, on cable and stremaing, you can find no lack of TV channels which are pretty damn critical of Trump. MSNBC comes to mind.
Put if people want to get their news from Fox and the like, there is really not much you can do about it.

Consulates are there to help Americans overseas

You can't analyse Trump as being someone who is working through some rational logic. We are all human so we like to think we do this but we are fast from perfect.

Trump, on the other hand, is just chaos. He absorbs ideas from the many disparate groups that somehow make up "MAGA".

He then selects those ideas as they suit his current need. He does not necessarily believe or even understand them.

Very true...for me one of the more interesting questions (especially as a skeptic/atheist) is whether Donald is a true believer. He certainly knows nothing about Christianity and clearly loves himself more than he could possibly love some deity. Most of his on-camera reactions imply that he has been faking any genuine religiosity. On the other hand, I have noticed a bit of a shift since the assassination attempt. Of course it is convenient for him to say he was saved by God "to fulfill his destiny", but he seems more genuinely convinced of this. He has probably been told that so many times by his cult that it could be it is truly a hardcore belief for him now, it gives him carte blanche to pursue anything to assuage his fragile ego.
