A mostly disarmed Europe with a feeble defense industry was good for the US. In the past, a fully locked and loaded Europe has led to rivalries and world wars. Besides, the vast increase in units produced and sold of American arms is what makes them slightly affordable. The cost of an F-35 today would be through the roof if not for sales to third parties, mostly Europeans.
But thanks to Trump, Europe is circling wagons, and with conviction. The missing major partner is the still-rogue UK, but that may change. We can largely ignore and marginalize that clown in Hungary. Most importantly, like the Ents, Europe is about to wake up and find it is still strong. Trump just has to finish disgusting the Scandinavians until they vomit, and the European Defense Initiative will enter full bloom. France's extension of their nuclear umbrella to Germany is the first step in a game changer... but the cost to humanity of Trump's betrayal of democracy may very well be nuclear proliferation.
Make no mistake: Trump's second term is not "like" the threat of Nazi Germany. It is far, far worse.
