Split Thread Diversity Equity and Inclusion and merit in employment etc

You still haven't looked, have you?
On a quick look, that does rather look like a far, far more important and relevant issue than DEI even could possibly be, quite frankly.

There are certainly issues with outdated equipment and shortages in manpower. Taking a step back, issues with uncertain funding levels - which is often directly attributable to Republicans - seriously impede fully fixing those issues. That's a real problem, right there.

DEI? Quite irrelevant, quite frankly. To poke at that a little bit more directly - Diversity has ‘nothing to do’ with ATC hiring: Ex-FAA official

A former Federal Aviation Administration official said diversity has “nothing to do” with air traffic control hiring, adding he takes exception to President Donald Trump’s claim it may have contributed to the deadly collision between a passenger jet and military helicopter Wednesday.

“There are very strict requirements for air traffic control. It’s a two-year process. It’s intensive. It’s a lot of training,” Randy Babbitt, who served as the 16th administrator of the FAA, told NewsNation.

“You don’t just go from the end of your two years to Chicago-O’Hare,” he said.

Anyone trying to defend Trump's DEI moronics should likely take a step back and consider how much rationality and reality are actually informing their decisions.

Trumps anti DEI is really all about racism. He is supposed to given consolation to the USA about a plane crash disaster. He reads a few lines then launches into an attack on DEI even though he admits he has no evidence, just "common sense".

Did Trump look at the systemic causes of ATC staffing issues?
One of the causes of the "American Disease" is the deprecation of skilled labour, unless it's exotic IT like blockchain or AI.

Who would be working at ATC unless you like long hours, stress, relatively low pay and the knowledge that a simple mistake could cause multiple deaths.

Is DEI risking air traffic control safety?

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) blames the problem on the six-month closure of its academy in 2020 and a two-year pause in on-the-job trainings. But the crisis appears to have emerged about a decade into an Obama-era push to diversify the industry. Under the Obama administration, the FAA scrapped its hiring process based on aptitude test scores and training in 2013 and replaced it with one that considered applicants’ biographies, resulting in an ongoing class action lawsuit on behalf of about 1,000 applicants who were passed over under the new regime. The biographical component gave an advantage to applicants who had been unemployed for the past three years, among other traits the FAA believed would result in more opportunities for racial diversity.

The classes admitted under the system of racial preference are still occupying air traffic control jobs. From 2011 to 2017 the FAA reported an 83% rise in runway incursions — “incidents involving unauthorised aircraft, vehicles, or people on a runway”. Near-misses on runways have also become commonplace. There were at least 46 near-collisions on airplane runways in July 2023 alone; in some cases pilots steered clear of crashing into other planes with only seconds to spare.
Now I don't think this is the cause of the DC crash (the insanity of having blackhawks train over a commercial airport is more likely), but it be what it be.

You are confusing FAA with ATC. All ATC have to pass tests that demonstrate the ability to do the job. The FAA does much more than ATC.

The problem has been ever since Reagan went to war with ATC. America has the world's busiest airspace and numerous General Aviation flights flown by incompetent rich people.

It has had a constant battle to get enough controllers and keep them. Controllers have to work long shifts with not enough breaks between shifts.

DEI strikes again.

d in a surveillance unit. The scale of the preparations left her frightened for her life.

She detailed the activity in daily reports over the summer and early autumn of 2023, raising the alarm together with dozens of other young women “spotters” – charged with watching a tiny section of the border in intense detail – who were posted along Israel’s border with Gaza.

A cocktail of chauvinism, arrogance and complacency meant their warnings were ignored or dismissed by senior commanders for the region, most of them men.

So you're saying these folks can't get the postion based on merit but need the affirmative discrimation of DEI? Bruh.
No. You're saying that. You're saying that they're unqualified for the positions they hold and only got there because of DEI. That's what you're ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ saying and everyone else who opposes DEI. You hypocrite.
