Paul The Herodian and the DSS

If only there was an AI app that could parse a two hour podcast into a three sentence summary. :hit:
Three sentences is a challenge...

The bible nerds on the podcast talk about things mentioned in this thread: The evidence from Paul's letters, other early Christian writings and Josephus., etc

CH Lawson also appears to share my views on Qumran and its relationship to the early Jesus movement.

Some of the audio is a bit rough.

How's that?

Pretty GOOD!

But I must confess that I am not much wiser. :)

Why is Paul being a "Herodian" a revelation, so to speak? Haven't we always known he spent a lot of time in Rome? I am not a Bible scholar, so try not to talk down at me harshly.

The "Herodians" were the ruling class. The family and friends of Herod The Great, famous baby-killer of the Gospels. His son/Grandson was Herod The Tetrarch, the man who killed John The Baptist and was also involved in Jesus' death (according to the story). This "Tetrarch" is called "Foster Brother" to one of Paul's companions ("Teachers and Prophets") in Antioch where "Christians were first called Christians".

Paul and his gang were receiving financial support from the very people who were opposed to the original Jesus movement to the point of executing John and Jesus. Writing up all of those letters, gospels etc wasn't cheap. I saw Bart Ehrman say that one page of manuscript cost over $2000 in today's money - How many letters did Paul send?

No wonder the Ebionites preserved a tradition that Paul was their enemy and a liar. Those guys hated the rich...
