Can You Hear The Laughter?

I don't think he will become a full-fledged dictator along the lines of Stalin or Mussolini but he'll become as much of an authoritarian as we've ever seen before. We're certainly heading into dangerous territory.
Trump's just a hood-ornament on the front of a truck driving the USA to the rubbish dump right now. MAGA are just the crowd cheering them on like it's a monster-truck rally. There's still plenty of opportunities for a diversion to somewhere more pleasant, but it's the semi-anonymous fascisti at the wheel who are the real problem: Bannon, Miller, etc. They WANT it to go to the dump because that's where THEY live. And the longer they are in charge, the less the opportunities there are to stop them. They are the ones needing removal from power, not necessarily Trump. Trump could die tomorrow, and they would just put a cardboard cutout of him where he once stood (Donny is so out of it that they already have, effectively) and the MAGA masses would still cheer him on.

I'm thinking more an Orban than a Franco maybe a Peron

As I pointed out in the election thread, this election was literally a 50/50 split. Unless half the electorate is going to roll over, Trump will have a major uphill battle to become Supreme Leader. Complacency and not fear is our chief enemy right now.

I had a horrible day yesterday. I'm not a person disposed to depression, but I woke up around 4:00 AM and all I could think about was what the next four years are going to be like and how ashamed of and disappointed in my own country I am. I was literally on the verge of tears almost all day and so depressed. I still can't watch the news in case I see his ugly, disgusting face and hear his grating voice which make me sick.
Think of this as less of the end of the world and more of a test of whether American democracy can withstand a TFI like Trump as POTUS.

where will this battle be fought? In the courts? Cases getting moved upwards again and again until they reach the highest court in the land. Where, no doubt, the right decision will be made...

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I used to like to catch the news headlines a few times a day. But now, every news report has his smug face or something related to him and I'm so sock of it. I feel like I'm watching our country walking the plank and many of us are saying "Stop! Stop!" and not being heeded.

This is the way it's going to be for the next 4 years. When Jan. 6 happened, I thought that, for sure, this would be the straw that broke the camel's back for most Americans, even most Republicans. I forgot what my late mother used to say, "Never underestimate people's stupidity and you'll never be disappointed."

And that is why I think Trump wil fail to become a dictator: He is too damn stupid to pull it off.
For one thing he is way to obvious about it, you have to be sneaky to pull it off.
I hear this. Also, you have to be strong and committed to be a dictator. Trump is neither. He wants to run our country like an owner or CEO that no one questions, but he is submissive when he stands in front of someone like Putin. That's why I'm not afraid of actual, real fascism from him. I'm worried about the mindlessly stupid things he's going to do, and who he might be paving the way for.

Next 2 years. Trump is going to mess up so badly that I think the House will trun in 2026.

Actually that's a pretty safe bet, even if it was a more... Rational republican in the white house.

The party that holds the presidency tends to lose support in the house in the mid-terms. (Maybe voters consider it a safe way to "vent")

That may be true, but as alfaniner said, "every news report has his smug face or something related to him" will still be true for the next 4 years and 2 months unless he drops dead. The House turning won't change the fact that he'll still be the POTUS until Jan. 2029.

Yeah it’s a fun cycle we have going. Elect Republicans and watch them set the country on fire. Elect Democrats to clean it up and then blame them when every single problem isn’t perfectly solved. Elect Republicans again.

Trump is not to be afraid of. It's the people pulling his strings and whispering in his ear.

SO Democracy ia a failure...people are too stupid to govern themselves and power should be placed in the hands of an educated elite to run things?
That is the vibe I am getting.
