Refute what? My view is that people ought to be able to say what they want without some high-minded censor. The solution to inaccurate information is more speech, not less. This used to be a firm tenet of the left. That the left handed off this value to the right is bewildering.

Well, then I have good news for you: People are still free to say what they want. No one is being censored because other people choose not be around them anymore, which by way, is another important right: Freedom of association. Twitter remains a bastion of free speech and no one is stopping you from mingling with all the anti-vaccine and Nazi accounts that your heart desires. Have fun!

Well, yeah. The people who are upset that Twitter stopped censoring different viewpoints are going to a place where they can enjoy that censorship. Just pointing that out.

No, it’s that Twitter has been overtaken by ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ and normal people don’t want to be around them anymore. The ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ are still free to be ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊. No one has been censored.

No one has been censored.
Of course people have been censored. That's not even a bad thing, there are categories of posts which we pretty much all want pulled down on Bluesky and Twitter (e.g. CSAM) and we've already agreed not to post when we signed up.

Neither Twitter nor Bluesky come close to the censoriousness of this forum, though, where even derailing is monitored and sent to AAH. This, too, is something we've all agreed to in advance.

When you turn the concept of “censorship” into something so benign and ubiquitous, it becomes meaningless and not at all relevant to how it was being used in the post I was responding to.

IMHO the whole Twitter and similai programs by their very nature do not encourage any real debate. The format is wrong. You can have an detailed sicussion with a system designed to produce one liners.

Here is a typical Bluesky post

There is not a snowball chance in hell I am going to get any truth from this decrepit far left site.

Well, you seem to get your information form decrepit far right sites.

Why do they have to be for debate?
That was never the intention of Twitter and similar

TwiX suddenly changed their format in the last day or so. It used to just give me mostly a single-word list of subject like "Monday" or "Conflict" with all the MAGA idiot comments visible if you clicked on it. Now it shows full headlines and related stories if you click. I don't know how to see the unwashed idiots' comments any more.

What on earth does this have to do with debate?
It shows how Bluesky will not allow any postings that conflicts with their orthodoxy. A debate will pretty naturally have "another side". This is Babylon Bee, not the Klan. If Bluesky can't bear the sight of a mild conservative satire post, you can infer that no debate can be had at all.

ETA: an echo chamber is a really snuggly place to avoid having your cage rattled though. No challenges, nothing to make you rethink your positions. Just a cocooned little safe space.

So I signed up to Bluesky and was pleasantly surprised to find at least some of the beat reporters I follow have opened accounts there. There will have to be a whole lot more before I can ditch twitter completely but I plan to spend the next few months recruiting a few with whom I have good relationships.

Hopefully I can go from being a daily twitter user to a weekly user, than a monthly user and eventually delete my account. I am so sick of that rathole.

With Bluesky adding new users right now at a rate of about 6/second, I am cautiously optimistic that it might become a legitimate alternative.
