General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

Clarkson says

I’m becoming more and more convinced that Starmer and Reeves have a sinister plan. They want to carpet bomb our farmland with new towns for immigrants and net zero windfarms.
But before they can do that, they have to ethnically cleanse the countryside of farmers.

In this situation Farage is Fawkes. He wants to destroy parliament.
Fawkes et al wanted to kill the king. Parliament was, or rather would have been, collateral damage.

It was just another chapter in the stupid fight between different flavours of Christianity. There were no heroes in this story, merely shades of bigoted douchebaggery.

All that being said, they at least believed in something more than personal enrichment, which makes them better people than Farage will ever be.

Clarkson says

Says the man who literally bought a farm to avoid inheritance tax. If farmers are struggling its because they overwhelmingly voted for Brexit, barely 500 farms would qualify for Inheritance Tax anyway.

Clarkson is talking utter nonsense again (you ain't no 'farming family', bruv, that refers to more than one generation). Building on designated farmland is likely prohibited and would take a change to the statutory instruments or Act of Parliament. Even using so called 'brownfield' land isn't something Starmer and Reeves can just bulldoze their way in. It needs careful planning. Postwar we had new towns such as Milton Keynes, Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City, which are not 'full of immigrants' (note Clarkson's appeal to racism).

Here in Finland you are not allowed to build anything on designated farmland. There is a 'tontti' bit where you can build farmhouses, etc. (which still needs permission) ours is about one hectare with one-third of it forestland and is actually of higher market value than the fields. Being in Finland's fertile belt, it is extensively for agriculture, and also husbandry, only. I should think the situation is similar in the UK. There is no way Starmer is going to raze farm land to the ground as Clarkson irresponsibly claims. He is despicable, stirring up trouble just because he wants to evade a small sum of tax, which with his wife's portion of the allowance means it wouldn't be payable until beyond £3m, assuming their non-farming assets are over £1m and they don't have to pay Business Relief as well (which uses up some of the IHT). If left to the kids, they each have an individual allowance of something like £600,000 which means even less IHT is due. Clarkson is being less than transparent. He should keep his hissy fit to himself.

The royal family charge the RNLI in the Scilly Isles for the lifeboats crossing ' their ' beaches when they are launched .

So when lives are saved there, by a charity, the royal family get money from it.

Also six lifeboat stations owned by the RNLI have to pay £600 a year in total to use Duchy beaches in Salcombe, Sennen Cove, the Lizard, Rock, Penlee and St Mary’s.

King Charles is a patron of the RNLI,

That’s why he gives them mates’ rates!

I assumed he would go to the Clacton service.
How nice for the people of Clacton to have their MP lay a wreath at their constituency ceremony.

Back when I used to take part in the parade and service in Guisborough in the 70s as a Sea Cadet (I was guard on the cenotaph with two army cadets and another sea cadet for 3 years, rifle at the reverse etc) our MP was always there along with Lord Guisborough.

1978. I am the cadet with a rifle at the end of the right rank, there's another cadet with a rifle behind me..

Together with two army cadets we would stand at the four cardinal points, rifle reversed and head bowed while the last post was played and wreaths laid.
They stopped doing it in the 80s when someone decided it wasn't a good idea to have cadets parading in public with rifles.

After the parade in the British Legion club we always got a few beers discretely slipped to us by some of the old timers.

That's my dad leading the right rank, he was a sub lieutenant in the sea cadets but in real life he was a chief engineering officer in the merchant navy. You can tell he's an engineer because he's wearing a 'soft' engine room cap.

What is a 'right rank'? Is that your dad at the front on the left..?

No, that would be the army.
It's a rank, turned in to the direction of march. Technically it was the rear rank. We paraded in three ranks and turned right in to the direction of march.
You can tell it was the rear rank as my dad was a sub lieutenant with one ring. You can see the other officer is a lieutenant with two rings and, as officer in charge he has a sword. That's lieutenant Harrison, veteran of Arctic Convoys and Cape Matapan.

Note that as the Senior Service we lead the parade, even in front of the Territorial Army.

Fascinating.

And within 4 years you were on active service in the Royal Navy if my recollection is correct
