Cont: Musk buys Twitter II

Of course he did. Brazil is a huge market, and he needs the money. Selectively posturing about "free speech" over court orders only when they come from leftish countries might endear him to his far-right customers but it doesn't extract any more value from them.

well now the far right guys can explain how it's actually a genius move for the richest man on earth with the freest platform on earth to have completely capitulated on his free speech principles for money in a matter of weeks

or i guess they'll just ignore it now and when it's brought up in the future when elon does the next hypocritical thing

Bad move for users who don't want to be harassed.

Presumably good for harassers.

I've never used Twitter a user so no idea how it works, I take it currently it's as if someone here putting someone on your ignore list also puts you on theirs and the change is to make it like our ignore system i.e. you stop yourself seeing someone else's tweets?

Google & Microsoft very disproportionately donate to the Democratic Party.

Between them, they control close to 100% of web browsers and search. Even with the best of intentions, they can’t help but introduce bias.

In other news people still use condoms.

HOSTS files protect you from things? I don't get the comparison. There are WAY better options than HOSTS files, but this is neither the time nor the place.

I've done networking for a decade and my most recent job was the only one that used HOSTS files and it was the absolute first thing we changed because they're a ridiculous way of managing IP to hosts and vice versa.

I use a curated list of, among other things, maladvertising sites.

I use adblockers and other tools.
The "professional" solution the big bank I worked used (Websense) was a pile of ***** that blocked important IBM sites. Not many major banks don't use IBM tech.

eta: I'm 65 and definitely old school but I believe in defence in depth and use old and new tools. My hosts file improves my web experience by blocking a lot of maladvertising sites (except on FB where I use FB Purity).

I guess I wouldn't know. I use a pihole to block everything at the DNS level and can insert blacklists that are curated by others directly into them that are continuously updated by others. I can whitelist based on anything I need and I don't need to install any third party software into web browsers or worry about someone on my network clicking on ads.

If that's how you get down, rock on. If it works for you then it works for you.
