Part of the reasons the US parties don't matter that much anymore is because the individual candidates can raise money so easily on the internet.
Well, I learned something. Not sure how I feel about it, I mean, if I give to Harris, I kind of expect it to go to her, not some guy in Arkansas. I think that's different than if I donate money to the party, in which case, I hope they'd spend it on whatever candidate needs it and where it would do the most good. I wouldn't want them to spend it in some district where the candidate doesn't have a chance or where the other candidate doesn't have a chance.
Candidates raise money for themselves and the party. No one wants the money to be wasted. So you're not alone there.
Al Franken told this story. He first met Tim Walz's at one of Tim Walz's first campaign events. Al Franken and his wife were the only two to show up. Franken and his wife were so impressed that they each donated the maximum amount to his campaign. But Walz's Congressional district had a reputation to be a blood red district. He was thought not to have a chance to win. Franken called Rahm Emanuel who was the head of the DNC multiple times over months telling him that Walz was special. But Rahm told him Walz couldn't win. But Walz stayed close in the polling and eventually the party invested in Walz and he won.
There is a benefit not to just give up on a district because of history. Orange County, California was for decades upon decades as Republican a district as could be. Not any more.
