General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

What we have discovered today is that when the people of this country turn up, the fascists run away.

10,000 estimated by the police at the anti fascist rally in Walthamstow, East London.

No rioting.

Apparently GB News are to consider suing advertisers over boycott them.
They are ‘closely monitoring’ Elon's lawsuit against advertisers.

Neither GBeebies nor X have bought any advertising space on my front window or the side of my car.

This is an unacceptable...thing!!!11,1!onetey, eleventy, whatever.

I shall sue them for all of their money. When I inevitably win I shall use all their money that is now my money in the service of humanity, nature, and that kind of stuff.

And Munrospun ties, the unlined, earlier ones: short, with a good broad blade.

Also turkish delight/lokum (makes the sacred sign of protection against Emre) and KitKats.

Well since that would be a lie, no they didn't.

Gatherings in locations where anti-immigration protests had been expected - including north London, Bristol and Newcastle - were largely peaceful, with counter-protesters chanting "refugees are welcome here" forming the bulk of the crowds.

In Southampton, between 300 and 400 people assembled at Grosvenor Square, chanting "racists go home" and "racism off our streets". About 10 anti-immigration protesters also arrived in the area, with the two groups kept apart by police and only one arrest was made.

Doesn't seem to be what they were shouting, no.

I did wonder how likely it would be that details of planned right wing events would be easily available, but I think the counter protests were a good thing regardless of whether an actual protest was going to happen at a particular location. It demonstrates the level of opposition, and mobilises supporters in case more protests do come.

Police feel their intelligence justified a national mobilisation, the biggest to combat feared disorder in over a decade, and the employment of 6000 riot officers, one third of the total in England and Wales.

Earlier Earlier Nick Lowles, a long standing expert on the British far right, and who now leads Hope Not Hate, told the Guardian that he was sceptical there would be widespread trouble on Wednesday evening.

The expectation was triggered by a list of targets found on social media. Lowles, speaking before this evening said: “I think it’s a hoax, designed to spread fear and panic.

“The list has been compiled by one man in Liverpool, who simply googled immigration law firms etc. No-one is organising the local protests and there is very, very little chatter about it on the forums and WhatsApp groups that have been key over the past week.”

Police expect the next couple of days to be relatively quiet and more so called protests are expected this weekend.

The Just Stop Oil sentences may have been a little on the high side, but there have been good reasons given. The amount of planning involved, the number of people affected and the severity of the effect, the history of the participants indicating they were going to continue doing the same sort of thing and worse, and the unwillingness to compromise. That's really a subject for a different thread, though it does somewhat give the lie to the 'two-tier' slur.

So being stuck in traffic an extra half hour is worse than having your life's work destroyed?

Why do you always lie?

I did see some reports yesterday, which I can't find now, that one group had been heard chanting "Allahu Akbar". Given the ignorance of the far right, that might be an inadvisable thing to do, but to a Muslim, it's a perfectly innocent phrase, something they do every day akin to a Christian saying, "Praise the Lord", and I would also understand if they chanted it as a sign of defiance.

So, it's not inconceivable that it happened, the context is what is important, and also the fact that the people doing it, if there were any, were not throwing bricks or burning libraries or hotels.

From now on, a vote for Reform is clearly a vote for racist riots. That’s why Farage is so rattled.

The Cosplay Cleric* & (I think it was) Dan Wooton think the riots are James O'Brien's fault. Desperate Dan claimed to have proved this but frankly I feel surrounded by enough stupidity I'm unenthusiastic about seeking out more.

*My preferred sobriquet for this clown would earn me a yellow card at best.

They are turning on each other.

It is profoundly disappointing that when his country needs him most, he is protecting himself whilst throwing those who believe in him under the bus. That's not leadership. That's not who we need leading a Britain in brutal crisis.
Man up @Nigel_Farage and stand for the people.

If there is one thing you can guarantee in this world, it is that careerist politicians will throw you under the bus at the drop of a hat if it serves their best interests.
