Japan's amazing trains

Also, China built lines that were too long and going to remote regions that couldn't support it.

Well, yes. That's a big part of my point, and why China is a bad example of good high speed rail.

Thanks for sharing the video. I love the Japanese trains, especially the one man trains in the rural areas. And, of course, the Shinkansen lines.

As a non-resident, I'm able to get the Japan Rail Pass and roam about the country. I'm not sure if these are available to resident of Japan yet - I heard that may be coming.

Still, as impressive as the Japanese rail system is, it's sure to be outdone by the upcoming California High Speed Rail. :p

Well, after recent price increase of JR pass you really have to get creative to get your money worth.

Some of their lines are a bad example. Particularly the ones that stretch out to their West. West and Central China are sparsley populated with no cities large enough to support a HSR.

Right now, it looks like HSR is best kept under 1000 miles throught reasonably populated areas. So, New York to Los Angeles currently wouldn't work. New York to Chicago and Los Angeles to Denver would work.

A couple more interesting videos I came across recently:

Japan Railway Enthusiast’s Paradise: Kato Hobby Center Tokyo Model Train Store

The title of the first one is pretty self explanatory. There isn't any narration but if you like model trains it's nice.

This is The World's Most Remote Infrastructure Project

The title of the second one doesn't give a lot away, but it's about a network of tunnels connecting different islands of the Faroe Islands.
