Does 'rape culture' accurately describe (many) societies?

As the Barnardo's statement (above) shows - we are in the midst of a continuing porn scandal that should have been dealt with years ago.

It is harming people - here is the reality (from Barnardo's):

Your argument is with the likes of Daniel Kebede (a former teach - now General Secretary of the NEU in the UK) who, as I have already pointed out, firmly points the finger away from parents.

Do you have similar expertise to Kebede?

Which argument? The quote you produced agreed with the post of mine you quoted!

You think we should immediately shut down material that Bernardo's says is 'rife on mainstream porn sites'? Bernardo's and other charities and child experts called for immediate action 2 years ago.

I don't see many or anyone here agreeing.

Absolutely agree with the quote that you reproduced, I don't think anyone here would disagree with it.

I'm sorry, I'm still failing to see how it is unrealistic to expect parents to, well, to parent. To manage and control that which their children are exposed to and use their best judgement to do so.

I'm probably missing something.

It is encouraging that you agree with it - but I didn't ask that.

This only addresses the access children have to porn...the Barnardo's statement goes further...

If it were realistically possible 'to parent' as you suggest then Kebede would have said otherwise than he did:
We can’t individualise the issue and put it down to problem parenting

I said I agreed with it, didn't you ask me that?
I asked:

This seems to boil down to "It’s very difficult when every other child has access to a smartphone to be that parent who says no." (a direct quote from the article).

Well, no ****. Who said parenting was easy. It's not. It's legendarily difficult. Parents have to do difficult things like say 'no'.

Have we really arrived at the point where it's impossible for parents to say 'no' to children?

You are an expert like Mr. Kebede? Why didn't the Guardian just rubbish what he said ...as you have?

...and nothing that deals with the rest of the Barnardo's statement that isn't about children accessing porn.

Why do you take his claims at face value? Just because it's in the press, it doesn't mean it's true. The man is expressing an opinion. I'm not prepared to take that on faith as you seem to be. I accept what he's said, I just think he might be wrong.

...and nothing that deals with the rest of the Barnardo's statement that isn't about children accessing porn.

Then that's a different issue.

My default position is that it is up to parents to parent. And, when necessary, say 'no' to their children, even in the face of peer pressure.

I am prepared to be persuaded otherwise, but one statement by one man is not sufficient to convince me of your position.

What is this, every two weeks this thread resets to zero?

Or it's a reminder every once in a while of the continuing societal scandal of anything goes internet porn.

Did you read the Barnardo's statement? Do you agree that we should immediately take down the material they describe as 'rife on mainstream porn sites'?

You clearly missed my previous reply to you.

Oh, I lost interest in this long ago. I'm just curious because I've never seen a monomania on a set two-week cycle.

You are of course entitled to your opinion but this isn't a serious rebuttal of what I said.

You are correct, it's not. But your claim itself was a stretch, and you haven't put forward a serious argument in favor of that claim. Essentially you said A is a form of B, so B is a form of A. But that's a logical error. Squares are rectangles, but rectangles aren't squares.

That 'rape culture' normalizes and trivializes sexual abuse is just a formal definition.

No, that's not a formal definition. It's a description of what rape culture does. But unless you want to so stretch the term as to be meaningless, it quite obviously cannot be a formal definition.

Consider the following hypothetical. Yes, I know it's not going to be realistic, but that's beside the point, because we're talking formal definitions (your choice, not mine), which must make sense even under unrealistic conditions. Imagine a culture where rape never happens, but men frequently smack unwilling women on the ass in public without repercussions. This isn't rape culture, because rape never happens. Sexual assault is both normalized and trivialized, as you stated, but it's still not rape culture. Rape culture has to somehow actually involve rape at some stage, or it's not rape culture.

So, is children having unfettered access to pornography a problem? Sure, I'll agree to that. Will it lead to more rape? Possibly, but that's a connection that needs to be demonstrated, we cannot take it as axiomatically true. Is it part of rape culture? You need more than what you've offered so far to make that connection.

None of which deals with my post. Not being interested in what is clearly the normalization of sexual abuse (as described in the Barnardo's report) is a sign in itself of rape culture.

I'll quote Wilberforce form his speech to parliament in 1789:
"You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again you did not know."
