And just when the Tories were hoping that the heat was off about the betting scandal. From the BBC rolling coverage:

Cabinet minister claimed he won £2,000 on election bets

A Conservative cabinet minister claimed that he won more than £2,000 betting on a July general election.

Shortly after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the election date, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack told the BBC he had made £2,100 after betting on June and July election dates. He claimed one of the bets was placed at odds of 25/1.

Last week, Jack told the BBC the comments were “a joke… I was pulling your leg”.

Today, the Scottish Secretary said in a statement he “did not place any bets on the date of the general election during May”.

Rishi Sunak made his surprise election announcement on 22 May.

“I am very clear that I have never, on any occasion, broken any Gambling Commission rules”, said Jack.

“I did not place any bets on the date of the general election during May - the period under investigation by the Gambling Commission.

“Furthermore, I am not aware of any family or friends placing bets. I have nothing more to say on this matter.”

Even if he was joking, that's not a joke you make to the national press! What was he thinking?!

I tweeted @Keir_Starmer on Twitter (x) and told him if he introduces a blasphemy law against islamophobia, as he has stated he may, both for personal attacks and online attacks on Islam . Then I for one am willing to risk imprisonment by continuing to criticize the Quran regardless of his law.

He has never said any such thing.

He has never said any such thing.

Claiming he did is a good way of outing yourself as a right-wing Tory/Reform/fascist type though.

The overlap between that and "peace and love" religious types never ceases to fascinate me.

A thought occurred, could the information about the date of the election have been classed as an Official Secret until it was officially announced?

A second thought. I live in High Wycombe, and have done all my life. The constituency turned Tory in 1951 (I think) when I was a child. I have voted in every Parliamentary election that has been held since then, and so have never voted for the person elected. I intend to vote Labour (who I think stand a reasonable chance of winning). Should I do so and risk spoiling my long held record? (Rhetorical question of course)

Whaddaya know, we're neighbours. (Woburn Green for a few years, now Chinnor)

I am on the state pension, and its news to me its taxable.

It is taxable.. Whether you pay any tax depends on the amount of pension you receive, as not everybody has earned the maximum pension.

I was looking forward to seeing John Oliver's piece on the election but it appears it is not going to be shown in the UK. My Sky box should have recorded it last night, but it's not there.

There's a summary of it in the Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-.../24/john-oliver-last-week-tonight-uk-election

It doesn't seem to be available on Youtube (over here anyway), which is strange because just as every music tape left in a car would eventually become Queens Greatest Hits, any time I leave YouTube running it inevitably turns itself into a John Oliver marathon.

However it has been posted onto Xwitter-:

And a Labour candidate has been suspended for betting. Against himself.

It's known as hedging your bets. A Spurs supporter I knew always bet against Spurs winning because he reasoned that whichever way the game went at least he'd get some joy out of it.

On another betting note, Robert Peston has been hinting that a personal protection officer or police office seems to have used the name of a cabinet minister when they placed an election bet (wink, wink, unless of course it was the actual cabinet minister...! ;)).

"Globalist" is code for "Jews". The hoary old chestnut promulgated by Hitler and co of a worldwide Jewish conspiracy in which banks and the media are owned by Jews, who aim to undermine 'blood and soil' by making everybody woke. Yet people swallow this crap. Oh, yeah, and they also manage to fit in Muslims as well.

Reform = hate preachers.

Farange comes off to me like a Oswald Mosley wannabe.

Everybody has a personal allowance. Roughly speaking, you don't pay income tax unless your income (including pension) is over that threshold. As the basic threshold personal allowance is circa £12K and the average state pension circa £9K you don't pay any tax. Even then you only pay tax on the portion that is above your personal allowance.

The people worried about being taxed more are those in the wealthiest bands. So ignore Sunak's alarm messaging, as you should be OK. No more than a couple of bob a month if push comes to shove for the the lowest 60% of the population income band.

I suspect there has been some jokes in the UK over the July Fourth date....like nothing of importance ever happned on that date.
