General UK politics VII -Return of the Starmer

Nigel says

"Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer are taking part in a BBC debate on 26th June.

As we are now ahead of the Conservatives in the polls, I demand that Reform UK is a part of this debate.

If the BBC want a fight with me on this, they can have one."

According to Ofcom - which is the body they keep mistaking for being the oversight to the BBC - past performance should also be used in considerations as to who to feature.

Well, Sunak is still PM and Starmer is leader of the official opposition.

Farage has never even been an MP and his party have never won a single election, their only MP is a defector.

Only in one poll, so does that mean he can only have a leg taking part in the debate?

I'm sure a good orthopaedic surgeon could be found to assist...

ETA Right leg, obviously.

In the interests of fairness he should be allowed his head in the debate. And I can recommend a good vet, well not a good one, and actually a tree surgeon but close enough.

Conservative MS (Senedd) Laura Ann Jones is under investigation for messages she sent to the assistant who put in her expense claims.

Her lawyer's statement: "Ms Jones is satisfied that any allegations in relation to impropriety surrounding expenses are entirely misconceived."

I mean, it's all just a storm in a teacup isn't it? Obviously these text messages have been completely misconstrued.

How votes translate into seats in our first-past-the-post system depends a lot on how that vote is distributed. The Lib Dems do better than other small parties because their voters tend to be concentrated in specific areas, mostly where Labour voters are thin on the ground.

Projections I've seen are that, on their current polling, Reform would not win more than about 5 actual seats. 20% seems to be the magic figure for any party whose voters are fairly evenly distributed across the country for the number of seats won to start reflecting the percentage of votes won.

SO UK polls are often as misleading and meant to generate click bait as US polls?

Conservative voters are notorious for being shy, vast swathes of them will at the election hold their noses and as usual vote conservative.

A phenomenon that has now spread to their MPs/electoral candidates being remarkably shy about admitting their party loyalties.

A Welsh Conservative politician has been stripped of her spokesperson job after texts from her phone appeared to show an employee was asked to maximise expenses claims.

Senedd Tory leader Andrew RT Davies said he has asked Laura Anne Jones, who is under investigation by police, to step back from his shadow cabinet.

Tory Minister Bim Afolami on Sky News saying Labour will tax your car.

Huge if true.

Yet again I feel it necessary to return to my oft-repeated line about elected politicians should be subject to the same T&Cs as mere nurses: I know several folk who were sacked for this sort of expense fiddling. Why not politicians?

Exactly. HMRC are very strict about what you can claim on mileage. Our team of reps in the wine trade - some years ago now - had to state their opening odometer reading and closing one. The expense claims on file had to show all of this information. People with company cars had to state what percentage of travel was for personal use, that part not allowable. But there was one little known trick I knew: you could legitimately charge a further 2p per mile for 'wear and tear'. I had a boss who'd demand that VAT be claimed on taxi fares. His reasoning was, if HMRC queried it, he would blame it on my stupidity. In fact, fare fiddling is so common, black cab drivers in London will invariably ask, "How much do you want me to out on this receipt, love?" knowing you are going to be claiming it back.

Personal mileage in every co. car I've had (since they started taxing them for the value of car I was allocated) has been included in the tax liability.
Whether that was a company decision or not, idk.
