General UK politics VII -Return of the Starmer

The bit I find oddest about Sunak's D-Day Dodging is that the interview was done so far in advance. Putting aside the point of why do it on that specific day, why generally do an interview that far in advance anyway? Even under normal circumstances events are likely to have moved on to the point that any but the most banal statements are likely to be out of date, anything topical will no longer be and things you're saying will have been shown to.be wrong either by events or (particularly in the case of the Tories) because they were outright lies. It also leaves you in the position where you're unable to respond to current issues, potentially wasting a TV slot.

This would be a strange under normal circumstances, but during an election campaign it seems utterly bizarre.

The thing is that one can't outflank Reform on the deranged wing. That's what Reclaim is for.*

*To be honest apart from the multimillionaire backers and the most famous proponent I haven't bothered trying to work out which is more deranged. Especially as neither are remotely interested in being truthful about their fascistic aims.

Reclaim is worse.

I mean Reform is...Just awful but reclaim is openly homophonic for example.

I'm not actually sure if that is a deliberate play on words with them sounding so similar. If so, well played.

It appears he had never intended to go to the evening event, before he even called the general election. It was a blank spot on his calendar so a good place to pop it in.

The fact that even prior to the GE being called he didn't think it was important even just "for the optics" to attend shows how politically stupid he and his team are.

It was more than that.

It seems to have been a planned snub with him only attending at all as a compromise for the French (reading the Times story I linked to above).

Which seems to be a way to declare independence from Europe. In a misguided attempt to appeal to the gammons. Fractally misguided, because that's not where elections are won, it's dangerous populism, and it actually alienates those he was trying to appeal to.

That doesn't explain why he would volunteer such a hostage to fortune.

We’re back to that old question of incompetence or malice. I can just about accept that the Tories are sabotaging their own campaign, but the facts are probably better explained by utter incompetence at all levels of the party.

So let’s get this right, he media are not currently allowed near Sunak so cannot ask him questions and the party chairman refuses to answer questions unless they are pre-agreed ???

So, Ed Davey is proposing to "invest" in the NHS and the care sector...

Well, Ed, can you remind us what you did between 2010 and 2015 to stop the NHS and care sector being trashed? Anything? Any little thing at all? Just a hint? Y'know, all those spending cuts? The job losses? The cuts to training places? The cuts to capital expenditure? Remember those?

Still, at least Davey doesn't have candidaters with a history of praising Nazi-appeasement, making hugely misogynist comments and more, not like Good Old Patriotic Nige...

I recall May doing so badly in her election that we wondered whether she was just deliberately scuppering it for some (Brexit) reason. But then Corbyn effectively said "hold my beer".

It was Starmer in charge of Labour's running for the 2019 election. Jeremy Corbyn was about the only senior Labour figure that didn't want an election that year, but the right of the party saw an opportunity to get rid of him.

We have a section for CTs.

I know the Tories like to pretend that everything that has happened over the last 14 years is Labour's fault, but...
