Criminal Charges Against Trump / Trump Indicted / Hush Money Part III

I don't think his being convicted is going to make anyone MORE likely to vote for him or will make MAGA not vote for him. It's the Indies who will make the difference and I think they are more likely to consider these convictions as prohibitive. Right leaning Indies could write-in another conservative or not vote at all.

to be fair to the downers, you have to admit that it’s not an unfair position to view things that don’t effect his life in any meaningful way as real consequences.

I guess it's how you define "meaningful way". I consider being the first POTUS to ever be convicted of 34 felonies and going down in history as such as pretty meaningful. If going to prison is the only "meaningful" consequence, then they've set themselves up for disappointment from the beginning because NY does not tend to send non-violent, first time offenders of class E felonies to prison.

Yeah we also have a rule about you can't order a coup against the election process and then run for President again.

Good point.

So far I have seen two replublicans say the verdict should be respected:
Larry Hogan, running for Senate
Asa Hutchison, ran for president

The rest have called the verdict a disgrace or something to that effect. The Republican party is in the toilet and they wonder why.

It's okay to celebrate even small victories, Debbie. Did not the Buddha remark that appreciation of tiny joys is the tzatziki sauce on the PITA that is life? No, he didn't, but nonetheless this has been a good day. I may celebrate with some Greek takeout.

Get me a lamb gyro wrap and some moussaka.

As a non-USAian, I am grimly smiling. It feels like the first big step towards eliminating the putrid orange pest from US society in all respects. There are more steps to go, and there will be setbacks no doubt. But it is upwards from here, America.

Next, I hope he gets sentenced to 2 months in jail...for each felony, to be served consecutively. That makes a total of *click click does sums* 68 months, i.e. nearly 6 years. Then even if he is elected, he will spend his whole presidential term in the slammer. Being president is not a get-out-of-jail card.

And spare a thought for Trumpy's lawyering team. Not only did they have to try and defend this sack of rotting yams, he has a chronic habit of stiffing them, especially when they lose. And this was one GIANT lose. The biggest. Like you have never seen before.

Tucker Carlson, on X:

Import the Third World, become the Third World. That's what we just saw. This won't stop Trump. He'll win the election if he's not killed first.
But it does mark the end of the fairest justice system in the world.
Anyone who defends this verdict is a danger to you and your family.

So that's how the Trumpists are gonna spin this, as an incitement for civil war.
I agree with the Montana fishing shop guy when it comes to Tucker...

A jury that knew of veiled threats and implied dangers stood up and did what before was unthinkable.

Kudos to the jury and the courts for making it possible to put mob boss trump on an equal standing with everyone else.

The next three trials he will face now have a pretty good idea of how to control his antics.

Totally agree, that's why I was so nervous before the verdict even though I knew all the elements of the case had been proven. Because all it would have taken is for Trump to pay off one juror or threaten one juror to derail the inevitable result. The fact that he could not do that shows the system is intact, for now.
ETA: while obviously a payment or threat would have been difficult to hide, I still was concerned that they might try through a third party.

The issue is literally any sane criticism of Trump is exactly why his supporters like him.

But why does that matter? The big mystery in the 2016 election was "How do we reach Trump supporters?" The shift since then has been, "Why do we even want to reach Trump supporters?"

Leave them alone. Let them be the clowns you point at as you say, "Hey, independents and undecideds, you don't want to be like these guys, do you?"

Question:

Judges often give reduced sentences if the guilty party is a "first time offender".

If Trump happens to get convicted at any other trial (either in Georgia, or the federal trial), what would be the results on his sentencing then? Would it lead to a harsher sentence because he is a "habitual offender"? Or would they ignore it because it was a different jurisdiction or because the indictments in Georgia/federally were issued before the guilty verdict in NY?

Josh Barro and Ken White's record remains unbroken: they released their podcast episode a day before a major legal news event, thus (purportedly) precipitating it.
