General UK Politics VI It's A (Honey) Trap!

Wait. Has a General Election been called?

Yes but Sunak has used his entirely proper and legal ability to place an embargo on that news, one that binds all the press in the entire world so you'll not have heard about it, only us very clever people who can read between the lines and conclude that 1+1 equals 3 know about it.

I just looked at that site, but I can't be bothered to join it before getting advice on tactical voting.

I was Labour, but Starmer lost my vote when he disciplined his own party members for calling a genocide a genocide.

You don't need to have an excuse to want Tory government to continue which is what you are you are doing if you don't want the Labour party to win.

Labour. As stated above, I am a party member, however, if the Lib Dems stood a chance of ousting the useless Tory I would have voted for them. However, the Tories are so useless, and the sitting MP so bad, they are probably going to lose Ken Clarke's very safe seat.

Sadly, no sign of my 3rd or 4th safest Tory seat constituency changing despite having a MP that is beyond useless and who is still crying because they got rid of her beloved Johnson.

When you decide if you are going to vote Labour or not because of some partisan quibble,

Just remember that 14 yrs ago there were no waiting lists over 18-weeks, no 12-hour A&E waits, no waiting an hour for an urgent ambulance, over 90% of cancer patients started treated within two months and everyone could see their GP within 2-days.

Then we got the Tories.

They don't have much in the playbook, the old favourites will be wheeled out. Along with the "they are all the same" i.e. "yeah your corruption may amount to tax not paid on £1500 and ours was a million plus fine for an ex-chancellor who was found to have illegally and knowingly evaded tax but it's all the same" and the almost subtle for the Tories - "Labour are Tories but for name" to supress the turnout of the more left leaning folk.

A line the far left are only too happy to collude with the Tories in pushing.

"I remain confident that my party can prevail, not because of our record alone, but because we will be the only party really talking about the future."

Do we think he actually believes it?

He called for a "New Patriotism" but Rishi 'Green Card' Sunak didn't clarify whether that patriotism should be directed toward the US or to Indian Business interests.

He certainly doesn't want to talk about the last 14 years.

It'll be an odd one here, it's been a Conservative or worse since 1910, with a pretty strong track record for them back to 1832, but there was a great deal of personal support for the current idiot.
Then he got arrested & lost the whip, is currently sitting as an independent and has decided not to run for the upcoming GE. The Conservatives are now running a newbie, she's only been a County Councillor since 2021 and has a strong corporate background.

Looks like it could be a fun one.

My own constituency, Newton Abbot, is reasonably safe Tory but it's been more marginal in the past and could go Lib-Dem.

My constituency has been increasingly staunchly Tory since 2001, but the incumbent is stepping down, boundary changes may favour Labour and Labour won in '97 so for once in a generation my vote might matter.

If the Conservatives were relying on the comparatively good news that the UK economy has barely dragged itself out of recession, this will not cheer them up:

The UK's unemployment rate has risen again and vacancies are shrinking, according to figures which suggest the country's job market is cooling.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the UK's jobless rate increased to 4.3% between January and March, up from 4.2%.

The number of vacancies also continued to slow meaning more unemployed people are competing for the same jobs.

New DWP rules come in this week.
People claiming universal credit and working fewer than 18 minimum wage hours a week will be expected to look for more, or better paid work.

Before now, claimants had to work 15 hours.

Also the DWP are to get more powers to arrest and investigate claimants they suspect of incorrectly claiming. As part of this 2500 'external investigation agents' are being recruited.
It is hoped to save or recover up to £1.25 billion a year.

Grant Shapps: "We're going to build up to 28 ships... a sort of golden era of shipbuilding."

This sounds very much like the 40 new hospitals, that the Tories promised in 2019, that have never materialised.

In the meantime they are getting rid of 2 frigates and still considering scrapping the assault ships

But it's OK there's going to be 6 new assault ships sometime in the future maybe.
