Merged Protests disrupt college campuses / Campus Protests

To be effective, protests need to be noticed. Getting notice by disruption and vandalism tends to be counterproductive - the resentment far outweighs the benefit of getting noticed.

100,000 people marching peacefully in Times Square is hard to not notice. Absolutely no need for violence, vandalism, chaos, property damage. Only thugs are into that ****.

1 person? Well, I have to say that while I was at university, I knew a few but if you're willing to stand by the idea that these women in that one clip were parents then I'll agree that things must have changed. Surprised they didn't bring their kids to the protest.

Are you guaraenteeing none of them have kids?

Also, I don't see what parental status has to do with the issue of a US ally using US tac payer funded weapons and support to bomb, shoot, and starve innocent men, woemn, and children.

Is your wife willing to sign up for a red role with plans on getting herself arrested for the cameras and so she can complain about the trauma of the whole experience the next day?

You seem to have a lot of stuff to work out.

White people are WEIRD. They're the only group with an out-group preference. No greater example of a luxury belief than a White person trying to score virture points by pooh-poohing other White people.

To be fair, "White" tends to be a moving target. My parents are Irish immigrants. Generally, I am "white". But sometimes, you hear it slip out from some old money, mostly New England, protestant types that we aren't.

And most white people score virtuer points with flags and crosses.

So far, I've managed to work out that you don't have a clue about what signing up for a red/yellow role actually means.

Allow me to educate you. :)

Protesters announced that protesters in the Encampment should “split into groups.” Protesters organized into a red role and yellow role. Red role protesters are reportedly “willing to risk arrest” and stay inside the Encampment. Yellow role protesters are reportedly “willing to support” but not risk arrest. Yellow role protesters gathered on the lawn outside the Journalism School.

Campus Protests

Protests against Israel / in favor of Palestine have gone nationwide in the last couple weeks, so much so that NYT has created an entire subcategory of "Coverage of the U.S. Campus Protests" which should be visible from the linked article. Most of what I've been hearing on the news involves pricey high-end universities such as Columbia and Yale but as you can see from the map, plenty of land grant universities are in on the action now. These students are in no danger of being sent to the front—as my father was when he engaged in student protest in Illinois and Michigan—so their motivations are correspondingly less straightforward. Feel free to discuss anything related to the protests, but my main question here is whether this nationwide movement is settling on any demands which might conceivably be met either by their own university administration or by the (next) administration in the White House.

i think it’s even more murky since it’s questionable how many of the protesters are even students

Here at Portland State, it's known that many of the protesters are not students. The city is blessed with a perennial class of protesters, who are always down to clown.

Just something to keep in mind: these are not lazy kids wasting college resources - they are the customers paying tens of thousands to get a degree that will help them get Jobs that earn enough. They have a legitimate interest in how the university is spending and investing the money they gave it.

Whatever might get broken in the protest, they already paid for.

Engaging in vandalism and destruction should HARDEN the views of the colleges, against giving in to any demands.

I 100% support peacefully and civilly convincing universities to divest and disengage from Israel. AND I 100% support colleges telling kids who engage in property destruction and vandalism to **** off and enjoy their time in prison.

That matters, except when it doesn't. In the case of CUNY, for example, "budget for the University is appropriated by the State and the City" so it's not surprising that random NY'ers feel like they have a say.

It is funny how it is only one side that has to be 100% peaceful.

the college is allowed to employ force to remove students, but students are not allowed to use force not to be removed.

It is always thus. those who can call on the cops get to do as much violence and property damage as they want, and those who can't get their stuff destroyed, get beaten and killed.

And unless it affects YOU directly, you can't see your hypocrisy.

A 100% peaceful protest on public land is a lot less likely to attract the attention of the police.

BTW, the police carry guns, do you think protesters should arm themselves too?

I can understand and forgive the wear and tear that arises from having to deal with a sit-in or a lockdown.

I can even understand and forgive sabotaging the tools of oppression.

I can't understand just smashing up the commons - things like the city's only community computer resource center set up for disabled access - until you get your way.

Or rather, I can understand it fine, just not in the context of TGZ's idea of ethical destruction in the service of a good cause. When armies do this, it's a war crime. When insurgents do this, it's terrorism. When protesters do this, it's in exactly the same moral category as those two things. And that's why I don't forgive it.

that's the funniest thing I'm going to read all day.

Apaprently, protestors should be dragged away and thrown into the dungeon for having basic tools. A protestor with a gun (or wallet if its th NYPD) would probably justify a drone strike.
