That is the modern meaning. Look up the etymology of 'muck' and its original meaning then you'll have a better idea of how the phrase arose in its pure sense.

What's wrong with saying it means there's an opportunity for profit in dirty work? Muck is dirt or more literally manure (as in "mucking out") is it not? And brass is money (as in "brass in pocket"), right? That's all pretty straightforward.

I don't know what "pure sense" you think you're talking about but I'm disinclined to suppose you have any special insight considering you wrote the phrase completely back-to-front.

That begs the question of whether this was a press conference or not. Do you have any evidence that there was a written press release prior to the comments to the press?

In fact, here's what we see.
  • According to this site, the fire chief talked to the press some time around 10:15 or so. By 10:19, he had announced that it was believed to start in a diesel vehicle.
  • There is a series of press releases from that day, beginning as early as 7am, but the first mention that the vehicle was a diesel does not occur until 3:30pm.
  • Hence, there was not a press release summarizing Hopkinson's remarks until many hours later.
So, it doesn't really matter how you think these things go. We can see that there wasn't a prepared press release prior to or shortly after the briefing.

We know there is a press release because every single news outlet reports exactly the same words.

Vixen has an intimate knowledge of Yorkshire homilies as a result of her study of the lyrics of Gilbert O'Sullivan.

Exactly. Smart Cooky was gilding the lily.

And he is furious that I spotted what he did.

You are just straight out, ******* well lying here. You are only standing your ground because you are trying to deflect away from the fact your piss poor reading comprehension skills have been called out - yet again. The funniest part is that your lying and dishonesty are having the opposite effect, they are drawing attention to your continual comprehension failures.

Absolutely EVERYONE here knew exactly what I meant, ONLY YOU were (allegedly) confused - and I don't think you were confused at all, or at least not after your mistake was explained to you. You are so stubborn, your avatar needs to be mule rather than a goat. When you are shown to be wrong, you just dig your heels in and refuse to budge - it just isn't in your nature to admit when you are wrong, even when you MUST know that you are wrong.

What you're back to here is your magical thinking in which fires that start in diesel vehicles and fires that start in an EV or hybrid have different characteristics that are retained even after the fire has spread to other vehicles.

Completely scientific. Fire risk assessment after fire risk assessment in building is designed to PREVENT fires from spreading. This means designing a car park in which car fires do not automatically spread to each other and certainly not to other levels.

If a fire reaches the stage of being uncontrolled then something in the FRA has failed to have done what it should do.

Magical thinking is believing there is nothing we can do about it.

... I would disagree the press report things accurately.
But then you disagree the Fire Service report things at all, even when they do and write "Press Release" at the top. So it seems like you are the one who does not report things accurately.

The website doesn't have an author so it is not official
The website is Copyright Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service so yes it is official.
... as is Hopkinson's press release.
Hopkinson's spoken briefing to the press was not a press release. You know this and so do we. You make sufficient unintended errors that additional deliberate errors seem excessive.

No. We know no such thing. They recorded his spoken words and broadcast or transcribed them into print. He was not reading from a script. There was no press release.

Go ahead. Use your considerable expertise in parkade fires as expressed in these threads and design one. Then post it here. Remember that the design has to conform to current building codes, and be economically feasible or no one will build it.

This in no way addresses the point it replies to. Which is that you seem to believe a conflagration involving hundreds of cars that's been burning for hours will have an entirely different character depending on what type of car first started it.

There is an official press release of the fire service website that says it was a diesel vehicle and not any kind of EV or Hybrid.

Why won't you accept that?

Because denial of facts is the only thing holding up this fantasy House of Cards she has spent hundreds of posts building. If she accepts that press release as factual, the whole thing will collapse in on itself, the conspiracy theory cannot continue, and she will have to pack up her stall and go home.

You are incorrigible. I am going to buy you a big wooden spoon to help with your stirring.

Just providing evidence that you may not have the linguistic expertise to reliably assess the nuances of the Yorkshire dialect.

We will see in due course if the vehicle is ever identified officially by brand, make, model and year.

Yes, we will. But more importantly, we will see whether the final report says the vehicle was a diesel ICE vehicle. In fact, I am very confident it will say that. I do wonder, however, how you will react to the report when it says there was no lithium battery in the initial vehicle that caught fire.

I would disagree the press report things accurately. For example, a press release saying 'X could be back after Easter' is invariably transformed into, 'X back after Easter'. Or 'Could this be the end of the triple lock' becomes, 'Triple Lock to end!' and anything that could be controversial is put in quotation marks and attributed to 'sources'. I shouldn't trust how news is reported in the tabloids if I were you.

This is utterly irrelevant. I've seen many sites that explicitly quoted the press briefing, including the "pending verification" caveat.

The website doesn't have an author so it is not official as is Hopkinson's press release.

What utter nonsense. The press release was released by the fire department. It is prominently displayed on the fire department website and classified as a press release. It is obviously an official press release of the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

You are just making **** up.

It simply reiterates what he said but gets rid of the conditional tense.

The "pending verification" caveat is not a "conditional tense", but let's ignore that.

By stating the conclusion that the vehicle is a diesel without "pending verification", the press release shows that the confidence in this conclusion has grown since October 11; that is, it shows that the verification has been found.

Moreover, you forget that it eliminates any question of whether the vehicle was a hybrid. This was something you thought was very plausible back on Mar. 17 and now you sort of, kind of know better. Except when you don't.

They report the same words because they were there to hear them or there was a wire service providing them with direct quotes. It would be a crappy organization that couldn't get the words right during a press briefing.

Anyway, we know that there was no press release at the time the first articles were written because the Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service publishes their press releases online and no press release mentioned diesel until 3:30pm that day.

Everything is syndicated these days. Only a small handful of press need to turn up at a press conference.

Well, so much the worse for your argument. You said that we know there was a press release because they all used the same words. However, if enough syndicate reporters were there, then all the stations, papers, etc., using a syndicate would report exactly what was said because the syndicate reporter heard it and either recorded or transcribed it.

But no matter. We know there was no press release containing the full contents of the briefing until 3:30pm (if ever), because we can look at the site where all BF&R press releases are published.

I like how, according to Vixen, the way to tell if someone has issued a press release is to survey a representatively large sample of media outlets to see if they're all using the same language in their reports.

Actually going to the entity's published press releases? Unknown technology!

Respectfully snipped.

That, evidenced by much posting history, is a no-brainer. We will be told that the Prime Minister's office intimidated and coerced the authors of the report into issuing a report favorable to that PM. What we will never, ever see from Vixen is a post saying "I was wrong."

Also, it seems that there's no way to produce a reliable transcript of what is said at a press conference. If only someone could invent some sort of device that records sounds.
