General UK Politics VI It's A (Honey) Trap!

It's a shame Baroness 'Dido' Harding didn't cancel Cheltenham with the same alacrity!

When the report comes out it will be interesting to see what the Inquiry says about that event and the number of deaths as a result thereof.

Did she have the authority to cancel Cheltenham?

I think is fairly dubious that an outdoor event significantly contributed to the spread of Covid.

Even May got more done with her minority government. It is unbelievable given the majority over the last few years how little they have done. It truly is a staggering level of incompetence and a lack of any kind of vision apart from enriching them and theirs, directly and indirectly.

if you lived in Scotland you would be grateful if the government had done little (less).

Another resignation, this time it's the SNP, who need a new FM. An old FM is tipped for the job (no not her, don't be stupid!) (or that other one!).

Everyone knows that the best choice for a FM would be Forbes. But the SGreens wouldn't support her for FM.

It's known as collective responsibility:

I have no idea what the rest of this discussion is about, I followed this from the Nominations thread.... but I really, really want to know what's involved in being the "Levelling Up Secretary". How many hours of video games are required to qualify for that position?

I see that the government is going to fix the most important thing about the NHS.

I'm guessing most people think this, which happens by default the vast majority of the time anyway, is far more important than actually ensuring that the treatment that we're entitled to is physically available without a massive waiting list and that the hospitals are not falling apart.

Er, she was head of the Jockey Club. Given most of Europe had already locked down and hundreds of thousands of Italians had dropped dead like flies (Finland locked down early March), it is very unfortunate people should cynically think Cheltenham went ahead because of old pals, I mean, BoJo and Dido are obviously naturally honourable. We should just trust they were acting completely honourably. And as for losing trace of £39bn which we are not able to track, despite being a 'track and trace' project, according to Rishi, we should be calm and compassionate because after all it was a state of emergency and panic.

But those bloody care workers claiming that they 'accidently' worked a few hours longer than the maximum allowed to claim careworker allowance for looking after desperately sick relatives 24/7 - my God! - one woman worked at Tesco on minimum wages and declared it thinking it was within the rules!!! Bloody thieving bastards!!! Should be sent to prison immediately and made to repay the extra £3,000 or so they were grossly overpaid over several years in care allowance to which they were no longer entitled.

Let's all spare thoughts, compassion and prayers for poor poor Honourable Baroness Dido. She wasn't to know. <fx tug forelock doff cap>

"Levelling Up" was a headline they invented during Johnson's time, which implied that they were going to do something to reduce gaps between disadvantaged areas, frequently but not exclusively in northern England, and highly advantaged areas, frequently but not exclusively in south eastern England.

In reality they've done the square root of sod all, aside from make more vacuous announcements.

Why, yes, I do live in an old coalfield area which has been ignored since for ever and in part of a county that is English, but politicians from both England and Scotland keep claiming is in Scotlland and so all of them ignore it.

Michael Gove probably has spent his time playing computer games as there is no evidence for him having done much else.

How very dare you.

Cocaine doesn't buy itself.

Government denies losing track of likely Rwanda deportees

Most of the asylum seekers initially earmarked for deportation to Rwanda cannot be immediately located, the Home Office has admitted.

Home Office documents show that of 5,700 asylum seekers identified in the initial cohort, the government had lost contact with 3,557.

Only "2,143 continue to report to the Home Office and can be located for detention", the documents say.

A government source denied the group were missing.

Are we surprised?

Anthony Boutall, Tory Candidate for Croydon and Streatham North says of critics of Cameron's £42 million private jet hire and he should have used something more modest

"The problem with this argument is that there isn't an excessive amount of cheap alternatives in the private jet market"

What happened to the RAF jet Boris blew a million on, fitting
it out for government use?

Or, call me radical, a scheduled airline?

The EU has said that 'deals' have to be made with the EU not individual members so the UK is just sticking to the post Brexit rules specified by the EU.

For a party that represents 'rural Britain' alienating 'the biggest source of foodstuffs' external to the UK may not be bad politics?

1) the deal was essentially one where the UK would honour its obligations under international law and not shift refugees seeking asylum to a third country.

2) It would be fine for the tories to p*** off their source of food if they had any chance of being food self sufficient. Given that the country is, at the most optimistic, capable of only providing 50% of its food needs, it's brain-dead stupid.

Flew from Gatwick to Sofia one time on a cheap airline with one seating class. We landed and taxied to a remote terminal with a red carpet and a delegation waiting. The back 20% of the flight disembarked and were met on the carpet with hand shakes, band etc. Once they were off, the plane taxied to the main terminal where the rest of us got off. Later found out it was a head of state and his entourage who flew with us. I found it refreshing but now I realise the error of my ways and am happy to be corrected in my thinking by the British Government. They shouldn't share a plane with oiks like me.

Mogg says "Rwanda is already working, illegal migrants are leaving the UK for Southern Ireland."
