Shutdown 2023

as always, the point of the shutdown is to get more power to Republicans - that is the reason why the US has a budget in the first place, not for something as pedestrian as funding essential programs.

House GOP pursuing two-step plan to avert government shutdown.

https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/11/politics/house-speaker-mike-johnson-pitches

The first bill would extend funding until January 19 and would include funding for military construction, Veterans Affairs, transportation, housing and the Energy Department. The second part of the bill, which would extend funding until February 2, would include funding for the rest of the government.

Neither bill includes additional aid for Israel or Ukraine.

So split out the stuff that is important to the Republicans from the stuff that is important to the Democrats.

They always propose that. The Dems never go for it, because without the GOP-favored stuff included, the Republicans will never adequately fund the Democrat-favored stuff.

Its like a broken record, the Republican party proposes this sort of split funding bill nearly every year that they control the House and it nearly always fails.

And around and around we go........

It's back in the news again.

Congress is on recess, or at least many members are heading home.

The current CR expires in two steps, first step on March 1 and the rest on March 8. A bit less than 2 and 3 weeks from now.

It's an election year. Today's GOP are dumb, they're really dumb, but I don't think they're that dumb.

Never underestimate the Power Of Stupid.

It does feel very unpredictable to me. This time more so than other times, what with the Ukraine aid being held up, the weirdness around the border security bills, all that.

The old GOP from a decade ago might not have wanted a shutdown in an election year. But that party is dead (or at least dormant). It is Trump's party now and they do what he wants.

I guess we'll see. Naught to do but wait.

Never underestimate the Power Of Stupid.

With apologies to Huey Lewis:

The power of dumb is a dreadful thing
Make a one man crap, make another man fling
Change a brain to a little white crumb
Worse than a feeling, that's the power of dumb

Tougher than Biden, richer than Trump
Stronger and harder than a really bad dump
Make a bad one worse, make a wrong one fight
Power of dumb will make you cry at night

It's not funny, it's really lame
Don't need no sanity to ride this train
It sucks and it's scary and it's cruel all the time
And it might just take your life
That's the power of dumb
That's the power of dumb

Shouldn’t the title of the thread be changed to “Shutdown 2024”, or “Shutdown this year”, or even “Shutdown every year”?

At this pace, we are going have shut downs as often as we have mass shooting

Back in the 80's, Republicans were interested in governing. I wouldn't count on a string of CRs this time.
