While it would be wrong to suggest that all people who live with considerable financial constraint will offend, research and practice shows strong links between crime and poverty. The Dunedin life-course study of 3,000 New Zealanders (and other research) shows, people from low socio-economic backgrounds are three times more likely to commit crime than those from wealthy families. Official crime rates are always more elevated in poorer communities, on both sides of the coin: victimisation rates are higher amongst the poor, and the poor are more likely to be arrested and convicted for offences. And, of course, social statistics in New Zealand strongly suggest that poverty is racialised: Māori and Pacific peoples experience ongoing, disproportionate levels of poverty.

It doesn’t take much to work out why this is so – there are a range of drivers. For young people who have grown up in violent communities, where constant physical self-defence is the only means of survival, acts of violence are an ingrained and apparently logical response to threats and challenges. For others, especially people with low self-esteem and limited work skills – and in areas where there are few jobs available – crime represents one of the few relevant sources of income and status. Children growing up in poorer households may be more vulnerable to some forms of maltreatment, which they then recycle, as learned behaviour, in their own parenting. They also experience transience, because their parents shift home in search of decent housing or work, which makes it hard for children to form lasting bonds; and they may not receive enough love and attention from overworked and chronically stressed parents.

The facts are simple... hungry, destitute people are more like to steal to survive than people who live in wealthy communities will steal to survive. This is straightforward human nature, any first year social worker or criminologist can explain this to you.

Good grief. Why is it always the "stealing food to survive" example and never the murder, rape, battery, assault, car-jacking example? PLEASE explain how being in the economic duldroms would compel a person to do these things.

Also, explain why Asians in New York City, 1/4 of whom live in poverty, are so unrepresented in city crime stats.

Well poverty per se does not 'cause' crime but all of the not-so-joyous things that go with poverty do. I wish I could have taken you on a tour in the 90s in NY when I worked as a legal aid attorney, I could have shown you first hand how poverty results in crime. (and incidentally, drugs--I was strongly pro-decriminalize before that job stint--not so much after it ) And of course there is a strong correlation between poverty and minority population in the U.S., go figure...

Poverty does not cause crime. But crime certainly causes poverty. The poor are more likely to be victimized. Which is why one of the best things we can do for marginalized people is to incarcerate repeat offenders.

Regarding the previous post, there are several unidentified juveniles who are shooters or suspects but there is no available description because they are juveniles.

There are 4 mass shootings with 0 described suspects despite there being dozens and dozens of eyewitnesses to each one.

One was at a French Montana rap video that was not permitted and had been relocated from a KFC due to an armed robbery where a Rolex was stolen. There were over 100 people in attendance and still no available suspect descriptions.

Another was at a street party that had been organized online. The police broke the party up on at least 3 separate occasions before being moved each time. At the 4th location, the crowd became hostile toward police and they were forced to retreat. The shooting occurred as the police were regrouping to disperse the attendants of the illegal party.

Another after a rap concert.

And another at a Halloween party where there were dozens and dozens of witnesses and there were 6 guns recovered, suggesting multiple shooters.

The number of known shooters could easily expand by double digits. I'll check back mid year to see if there are any updates.

It's not poverty, or race that explains why the USA has such a high rate of mass shootings and gun crime in general, it is their failed gun control. Every other country has areas of poverty and high levels of immigrants and they do not go around shooting each other with anything like the regularity of the US, because they find it very difficult to get guns.

I am quite sure if the UK had a failed gun control system, we would experience mass shootings and gun violence and deaths on a similar level to the USA.

Yes, the UK has a knife problem, because that demographic cannot get guns. That demographic is mainly youth gangs, who were known as razor gangs in the 1950s-60s, before zombie knives had been invented.

It’s really funny how lefties desperately try to ignore demographic differences. Lee Kuan Lee wrote that when he was in London in the 1950s, there was high social trust. Vendors could have their wares out open on the street and people would pay on the honor system. No longer true today. And when you look at the demographics of knife crime there, it’s not the skinheads (do they even exist anymore?) or the football hooligans. It’s . . . yeah.
