Go woke, go broke

Jesus H. Christ, I just wish we could go back to people discussing movies on their own merits, rather than just that I should love or hate it because, quoth South Park, "Add a chicken. And make her lame and gay."

Like, let's go back to the old best known (if not first) example of Alien: nobody gave a flip over whether Sigourney Weaver plays a gay character or nor, or even a female character. It just had to stand on its own merits. I wasn't told I'm the defender of all that's good and holy if I like the movie, nor that I'm some kind of closet nazi and enemy of all humanity if I don't like the movie. (E.g., because at the time I was kinda identifying as a girl, and liked romance movies more than action.)

And it's not even a new point of mine. For more than half a decade my posts boil down to "cut it out with telling me in advance that me/everyone who doesn't like your movie has some -ist or -phobe motive, and the other dumb excuses. Have it stand on its own merits, fer fork's sake."

But nowadays every sad loser wanker has to imagine that they're saving humanity by barking together with the popular crowd on Twitter/X, or for the other side, because that's EASIER than sorting out their life to be less of a sad waste of perfectly good sperm. Yeah, bark for some corporate overlord, like good puppies :p

That you're even trying to bend over backwards to distort my message and pigeonhole me in whatever category gets your ego-stroke about defending humanity, is just proving my point.

Sure! Just as soon as people cut it out with telling me I could only possibly have enjoyed the lady ghostbuster movie because I like stupid bad woke stunt cast pap.

Like, I love the RLM guys but their reviews complain about the same sorts of popular expectations you do... but their complaints about the lady ghostbuster movie all boil down to "it's not written anything like ghostbusters." They don't neeeeeeed to spend 15 minutes saying people are gonna say they don't like it cause it has lady ghostbusters. They can just do their review and everyone can say they don't like it cause it doesn't set up and pay off the same kinds of jokes etc as ghostbusters.

I mean I do get where you're coming from but also I can't see it rising very high on the list of obnoxious things that you just kinda get in a social landscape

But that's just my problem: BOTH sides are just fighting a nonsense fanboy war. It's just a flippin' movie. You can like it without having an agenda to ruin society/traditional-family/whatever, and you can dislike it for a mirriad of other reasons than being some kind of nazi. The discourse lately seems to have polarized into 'woke' vs 'fascists', at least according to the opposite side of each, with there being hardly more than lip service being paid to the idea that, yeah, they're not saying EVERYONE is an extremist if they have the opposite tastes, but really not YOU.

Back when we had Nintendo fanboys vs anti-Nintendo fanboys, we used to just call them what they are: dumb fanboys, measuring their self-esteem by how much they brown-nose their corporate idol. Nowadays it seems like they've taken over Twitter, and a few other carriers, and reassuring each other that their brainless bleating, fanboyism is some kind of saving the world.

Again, BOTH sides. The idea that you'll only stop braying and bleating mindlessly for one side, as soon as everyone else is brow-beaten into the ground and stops doing the same for the opposite side, is just self-aggrandizing rationalization, and a losing game all around. They too have the same idea that they'll stop whenever there's nobody left challenging their fanboyism.

Oh, well, yeah. Like I'm not actually doing either of those things, just noticing more 'everybody's gonna say im anti woke!' where I hang out, than 'everybody's gonna say im woke!' and in any case it only seems to become a real world insane thing when it goes on hannity or whatever and suddenly people are idk hitting the woke blenders with sledgehammers

Or the weird esoteric media crit gone mad stuff where people miss that the end of Steven Universe is a metaphor for a broken family reconciling and get mad that it's facist apologism (or don't miss it but are mad anyway)

Projecting much? You're the one going on about all the social ills here like:
"I just wish we could go back to people discussing movies on their own merits"
"Every sad loser has to imagine their saving humanity"
"Bark for some corporate overlord"

You're the one going on a "OMG the world is coming apart and I'm the only one with the sense to see it!" binge.

And I'm "bending over backwards to distort your message" by pretty much just quoting what you said?

Hate to tell you this, but this "can't discuss movies on their own merits"...I know plenty of places where we discuss movies and do that. We sure rag on each other a bit about some of tastes people display, but nobody makes a damn culture war out of it. That doesn't seem to be any problem at all. EXCEPT if someone comes in with some garbage like "I hate this woke crap!" or "Ugh I hate how unwoke this movie is!" (I speak hypothetically...never actually seen that). So I humbly suggest that, based on your statements here, if you can't seem to have a reasonable discussion about a movie I'd guess its because you start off with an unpleasant and biased comment that says nothing about the actual content of the movie.

You're going on like you're fighting some kind of crazy war for decency and common sense and its vitally important to the survival of the world (or at least the entertainment industry), yet you're projecting that same mindset on anyone who calls you out when the extent of your argument is "talentless woke chicks".

Oh, well, yeah. Like I'm not actually doing either of those things, just noticing more 'everybody's gonna say im anti woke!' where I hang out, than 'everybody's gonna say im woke!'

More of one or the other, sure, presumably also based on where you are and what people you listen to. And not always in the exact same wording. For example, when you say, "Just as soon as people cut it out with telling me I could only possibly have enjoyed the lady ghostbuster movie because I like stupid bad woke stunt cast pap" the accusation is that you're woke.

But the point is that it's even become a thing to say at all, when discussing some movie or some sneakers or whatever.

and in any case it only seems to become a real world insane thing when it goes on hannity or whatever and suddenly people are idk hitting the woke blenders with sledgehammers

Well, that's the Keurig Effect, where they get publicity by causing a media crapstorm. People just got reminded about a blender manufacturer that way.

Which I suspect is what they're trying to do with the movies too.

Stock buybacks help investors by reducing the outstanding number of shares. They also send a signal to the market that the board believes the stock is undervalued. Some see them as a sugar high for a stock price while others see them as a good choice for excess cash if no other investments are on the table.

A bit like a backhanded dividend, if you prefer analogies.

A stock buyback is most usually used by a company to siphon off profits to its largest shareholders and senior board execs. while also ensuring that neither the company nor its beneficiaries pay any taxes on their gains.

They can also be used in leveraged buyouts to take money out of a company before the creditors cop on that the buyout was massively over-leveraged.

I suppose this could go in any of several threads, but for those still fuzzy on the concept, I found a nice concise definition of "woke" that will help in further debate...

As opposed to

While maybe not a definition per se, I find Obama's description of it to be spot on. It's pretty much what I was thinking all along about it; his version is just much more diplomatic than how I usually phrase it.

Bud Light gets a life preserver from an unlikely source: Donald Trump:

“The Bud Light ad was a mistake of epic proportions, and for that a very big price was paid, but Anheuser-Busch is not a Woke company,” Trump wrote. “Anheuser-Busch is a Great American Brand that perhaps deserves a Second Chance? What do you think? Perhaps, instead, we should be going after those companies that are looking to DESTROY AMERICA!”

However, there does seem to be an ulterior motive:

Trump’s message arrived just before Jeff Miller, a top Republican lobbyist for Anheuser-Busch, announced that he will be hosting a fundraiser for the former president next month.

He knows they sold out to a foreign company years ago, right? Of course not.

Saw a Facebook post with Taylor Swift on a Bud Light can. That would be so cool if it were true!

They were losing customers before they "got woke". That's why they picked a young person who was big on Instagram for an advertisement. That's why they tried to roll out a bunch of pseudo-craft beers. And I don't see where they pivoted hard to "anti-woke". A rich guy supporting Republicans isn't new. Did they ever stop donating to the GQP?

One major problem with the "Woke" idiots is they make it tough for people who see real stupidity and sillliness on the left, and want to call it out.
