MOD says the Navy will end it's tradition of Chinese laundrymen on warships over spying fears and they will be replaced by Nepalese Gurkhas.

Hundreds of civilian Chinese laundrymen have worked on British ships since the 1930s with most from Hong Kong.

three were barred from joining HMS Queen Elizabeth on her voyage to the South China Sea because they might be spies, all the others will be dismissed and replaced.
Anoth one was dismissed this month after 39 years of washing and pressing uniforms and ward room tableclothd tablecloths because his family lives in Hong Kong.

A ******* disgrace.

A good Dhobie Wallah was worth his weight in officers braid.
If you were lucky, one of them was a sew-sew and did repairs and alterations or sewed badges for an extra fee.

Why the hell were they still doing that in the first place?

Because it's a full time job.
It's better to employ full time laundrymen than have dedicated crew members. Who wants to join up to work in a laundry.

Each ship made it's own arrangements including sending kit ashore to local laundries.
In the 20s ships on tropical stations, especially India and the China Station, had a lot of laundry and started employing laundrymen aboard the ships.
It was formalised with contractors being issued to laundry companies in Hong Kong.

Yes, but there's no reason that the people on the ships who do the laundry have to be Chinese.

The contracts have always been with the same Hong Kong laundry companies. Some of the laundrymen have worked on the ships for decades. Some families have worked for the companies for generations.

Wait is this in addition to the Tory MP who just got suspended over sexual misconduct or have the police finally started investigating Peter Bone?

Most of us are old enough to remember the Major government Tory sleaze scandals.

I think this rerun is proving the adage of history repeating itself as farce.
