Luton Airport Car Park Fire

Are you having trouble following the conversation? We were speaking about an official statement of the Fire Brigade.

You claim that such statements are written in simple language. I'm not sure that "pending final verification" is complex language, but whatever. The page right now says that the fire started with a diesel. It doesn't say anything about "pending verification". Rather it seems stated with certainty.

If they aren't certain, then this is grossly misleading at best. Do you think they prefer to be grossly misleading over somewhat complicated sentences?

I don't know about the USA but in England, everything is written in 'plain English' today - the advice is to write at the level of a 'bright twelve-year-old' - so that the average person can understand it. People do not understand words such as 'disclaimer' so that will be removed.

Are you kidding? Are you claiming no UK organisation will use the world disclaimer?

There have been only four videos that I know of. There is one taken on a smart phone by presumably another driver parked nearby, which just misses the far left of the burning vehicle. The there is one, presumably from the car park CCTV that gets the burning vehicle on centre. Then there is a fourth that professes to show the vehicle from the front, with a fire extinguisher on the ground in front of it and a registration plate claiming to belong to a 2014 Range Rover diesel and then there is the clip of the car plunging through the ceiling.

None of these are clips released by the Fire Brigade or the Police. However, they have not objected to them or said they are fake.

Why? Why cannot hey release official clips and pictures. What's with the heavy hinting. So the story appears with a clip of what looks like a Land Rover model. So now everyone says its a land rover but why not say so in an official statement? Why is the public left to work it out for themselves?

To me it seems clear the JLR brand is being protected from Brand Reputation damage.

Firstly let me note that as usual this in no way addresses the question asked.

Now regarding 'official' police and fire brigade videos, are you imagining the police and fire brigade have video recordings of the fire from before they arrived, by which time the entire floor was already engulfed? What events do you think they do have videos of and why do you think they ought to give it all to the press?

A bright 12 year old knows it was a diesel car and the wot-I-reckons are full of it.

Of course there'll be a video of every vehicle that arrived up to the point footage stopped because of intense heat destroying the cameras.

And yet, some people still seem unable to understand plain English in an official statement (not a press release).

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues, but it has been determined that the vehicle that first caught fire was a diesel car.

Oh yeah, a little box from an FB page written by the Fire Brigade-bod's clerk in charge of FB and Twitter posts. Jenny from Communications wrote that.

I’m behind; I know I’m probably the manyith person to say this.
This is a sad, sad post
From “no info was given!” To, “but this proof I’m lying and refusing to use information to inform my views” shows a person not only unable to make reasonable arguments, but to deny any reasonable arguments presented

And the press had shown you some of that CCTV. The bit somebody decided was dramatic, it would appear. If you want all the rest you could try a FOI request I suppose.

Assuming the car park has a typical modern day peppering of CCTV cameras the police will presumably be interested in following the car's progress toward, into and through the car park, to establish at what point it was perceptibly burning.

They might have been better off fitting the car park with sprinklers rather than cameras. I think that's a more likely recommendation to come out of this rather than any irrelevance about battery vehicles.

A bright twelve-year-old may not know that a diesel car can also be a hybrid.

A bright 12 year old would probably roll her eyes and explain the difference between hybrid, range extender and full EV cars to the bewildered old folks.

I don't really believe you. I don't believe that the concept that an investigation is ongoing is too difficult for a twelve year old. I don't believe that this rule would excuse writing as if one is certain when one is not.

I believe this is all just a sad attempt at ignoring the clear statement that it was a ******* diesel.

Then I guess that if it was a hybrid, Jenny would have said so.

I have read the press statement and having critical faculties, I could see it was heavily qualified.

I would have thought a life time of reading the UK press would have alerted you to what is definitely confirmed and what is not. To help you out, any headline that includes the word 'Could' can be safely disregarded, as in 'The Fire Could Have Been Caused by a Derv- says Fire Chief'.

Since the initial statement the fire service # have gone on to state that it was a diesel, not an EV.
