Cont: Musk buys Twitter II

The CEO* doesn't seem to understand how making money from advertising works.

It's not even going to be MySpace

*ha

Request for clarification: by "CEO" do you mean Yaccarino or the person who is really running Twitter?

I'd be willing to bet that Yaccarino does know how to make money from advertising, but she doesn't have any say in the matter.

Twitter are going to start charging new users $1 to sign up.
It's to stop bot accounts apparently.

All the bots that are already here must be laughing their chips off at not having to pay a dollar. Thank goodness they aren't a problem.

$1 seems a trivial price to pay for predatory bots that will easily recuperate these costs if they land even a single scam victim, but is exactly the kind of nuisance that will keep casual human users from signing up.

Hell, plenty of bots are paying more than that already for blue check verification and algorithmic boost. Access to a large user base to scam is easily worth the money, but Musk seems to think pay-walling the entire site will somehow be an effective anti-bot tactic.

As already pointed out, bot behavior seems much, much worse since the takeover, presumably because Musk fired anyone at Twitter that was actually implementing useful anti-bot strategies and is instead focusing on this red herring.

Yes, but what about a user base of the size of Twitter's?

More info here
The Verge said:
If you want to join X, the service formerly known as Twitter, via its website in New Zealand and the Philippines, be prepared to fork over $1 a year for the privilege.

The subscription, part of a so-called “Not A Bot” program, is beginning in those two countries and is designed to “bolster our already significant efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity,” X said Tuesday in an unsigned post on its help center. In addition, new web users in New Zealand and the Philippines will have to verify their account with a phone number, the post says. Fortune first reported that Musk was going to charge new users $1 a year shortly before X’s announcement went live.
Only those two countries, and only through web (not IOS or Android).

That was the reason for my asterisk

I hope something is done about bots. I looked at XpreviouslyknownasTwitter again today for the first time in a couple of weeks, and had 58 notifications, every one of which was a bot following me.

I repeat: I don't know what the hell Musk wants to get out of his management of Twitter/X, but it sure is not money.
His reasons are pretty clear, and no it's not about money. It's about freedom of speech - specifically his own and that of like-minded people. He was willing to spend billions to protect his your rights!

Except he wasn't. Turns out even the richest man in the World can't afford to blow billions so he can to call someone a paedo or deny Covid without censure. Now he's finding out why running a social media site isn't as easy as it looks!

But that's what money does to people. It will be interesting to see whether he learns from this, and also what becomes of it.

I think having Twitter X as a magnet to attract Deplorables is a good thing - helps keep them off other sites where they are more annoying. Now if only the EV detractors and global warming deniers could follow them...

Thinking I might spend a dollar and join Twitter X so I can have fun trolling for Deplorables. Please don't block those bots, I need as many likes as I can get!

Musk is reportedly talking about taking Twitter out of the European market because of the EU investigations into Twitter's non-compliance with many regulations.

Which is weird because EU regulators were thinking of doing the exact same thing.

Elon Musk running Twitter and sticking it to the EU is like Bart Simpson training his dog: "Now, sit ! I said, sit ! Um, take a walk. Sniff that other dog's butt. See ? He does exactly what I tell him."

Another Brexit benefit.

Yep. Any lingering thought I might have of actually signing up some time is pretty much killed by that. The amount is irrelevant, it could be a penny, but an app which starts by making me set up a system of payment for them is generally a non-starter.

There is that. I'm also reminded of Musk's Twitter bank idea and how a bunch of people said that they wouldn't trust Musk either with their money or trust him to keep things safe.

Yup, that was my thinking too

I haven’t noticed a huge change to my Twitter experience, but it might be analogous to the apocryphal boiling toad - hard to notice when change is so gradual. At worst, a rightward creep that’s easy to lessen with judicious use of the block function

One thing that can’t escape my notice: Mandy K Cohen, the Director of the CDC, has posted some rightfully pro-COVID vaccine tweets. One such here:

https://x.com/cdcdirector/status/1712852744875155864?s=61&t=Ndf3WQHD1m7z4Mog6ZXyRA

The comments skew at least 10:1 anti-vax. I don’t remember this being so clearly negative in the past.

As an aside, I got the most recent COVID booster on Wednesday, with zero side effects so far other than a slightly sore arm. I’m generally pretty healthy, but at 74 I can’t deny I find myself in a high risk demographic, and I want to try to tilt the odds in my favor as much as possible.

As somebody who closed their account shortly after Galaxy Brain bought the company, I noticed a huge change a few months ago. An account's tweets are no longer displayed chronologically unless you're logged in. I can no longer access real time information for Iarnród Éireann trains.

Elon Musk has said his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will launch two new tiers of premium subscriptions.

"One is lower cost with all features, but no reduction in ads, and the other is more expensive, but has no ads," the billionaire said in a post on X.

Brilliant logic: if you keep raising prices, you will make money even as more and more people leave.

In the end, you will have a fee of $1bn for 0 subscribers.

Profit !!!
