Cont: Musk buys Twitter II

Elon has removed the headlines from links to news outlets, effectively cancelling the publishers's primacy in summarising the content of their own writing....

The claim: it looks better
The real reason: to discourage X users following links to external sites
The consequence: people write their own fake headlines...

Via https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/musk-biden-transgender-died/

Clearly these are shot-lived pranks, because the articles linked do not say anything remotely like the fake headline but this is a handy degradation in integrity for more artful disinformationists to exploit.

But, you might say, this is no worse than legacy social media formats like this forum, where people can and do attach a false summary to their links. True, but Musk has been thinking ahead. Unlike this forum, subsequent replies are either curated to be Musk donors, or hidden entirely. Readers will be expected to do their own debunking and RTFA which pitifully few people do if the headline satisfies their biases.

Except it is going to have the reverse effect. People are more likely to follow the link so they can find out what the headline is really about.

https://www.mediamatters.org/twitte...ers,fewer individual monthly advertisers than
. Additionally, in the 12 weeks of Yaccarino’s tenure as CEO, the majority of the company’s top 100 advertisers pre-Musk spent a fraction of what they did in the 12 weeks prior to Musk’s acquisition.

For example, Visa — which Yaccarino cited as an example of a “returning” advertiser — has spent just $10 in the past 12 weeks, compared to roughly $77,500 in the 12 weeks before Musk bought Twitter.

Musk's Twitter falling flat on its face as being a reliable source for breaking news in light of the escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Old videos, sometimes from conflicts in entirely different parts of the globe, are being presented as new footage from the conflict. Spam and low information posts from paid bluecheck accounts are boosted to the top. Clout chasers with little regard for the truth post salacious, untrue accounts of the breaking news.

As a result, Peden says that he and his fellow OSINT researchers have to spend their time debunking years-old content rather than verifying and sharing real footage from the conflict.

Many of these videos and images racked up hundreds of thousands of views and engagements. While some later featured a note from X’s decimated community fact-checking system, many more remained untouched. And as Elon Musk has repeatedly done in recent incidents, the platform’s CEO made the situation much worse.

“For following the war in real-time, @WarMonitors & @sentdefender are good,” Musk wrote in a post to his 150 million followers on Sunday morning. Both the accounts Musk referenced are well-known spreaders of disinformation. For example, both accounts spread the lie that there had been an explosion near the White House in May, a story that made the US stock market briefly plummet before it was debunked.

Yep. See also curse of the Nobel Prize, of the manager of the month, of best supporting actress.

It’s no surprise that when someone gets an award for doing something exceptional that they don’t keep being exceptional.

There's also selective attention involved in distorting the frequency of these disasters.

It's important to note that @WarMonitors is not just antisemitic, but a pro-Russian fool and/or shill who's inordinately bad at even pretending to know what he's talking about with war.

The dude literally didn't know how paint works. As in, he thought you couldn't practically repaint vehicles outside the factory. 'What are they going to use, spray paint cans?' Yes, but also air compressor powered sprayers. As if military equipment doesn't end up with fully half an inch thick layers of paint after a few years.

In WW2 German vehicles were supplied with a paint spray gun and paint so cam could be applied in the field.

US and British forces had paint spray equipment at field workshops.

And yet another X/Twitter controversy: apprently HAMAS is using it to lspread their misinformation.
Muskl taking a lot of fire for it. Nice going, Elon, nice going.

if we learned anything since he bought it, it's nothing is on twitter that he doesn't want on there

One man’s terrorist propaganda enabler is another man’s free speech absolutist.
