Yes God ******* forbid your little Timmy get proper sex ed in school or anything like that.

I don't know about you, but when I got sex education in school, it was not a private conversation between me and the teacher, it was in an open classroom.

Pretty incredible that JK Rowling's name alone has become so widely and instantly associated with transphobia. What an incredible feat of reputational suicide from someone who otherwise would have had a solid-gold legacy as a beloved children's lit writer.

Commendable that the Canadian public, generally speaking, seems to have zero interest in this UK style TERFism. Just saw this whole idiotic controversy raging on TERF Island and said "no thanks".

Can you give one example of JK Rowling’s transphobia?

Not one that you would accept, I'm sure, so let's skip this tedious song and dance.

If Rowling is not a transphobe she has some of the all time worst PR on the planet, because boy do a lot of people think she's a transphobe. I don't think she's this inarticulate though, so seems unlikely that there has been big misunderstanding.

Joe's wild snark also begs the question that today's public school teachers have any clue what proper sex ed looks like - especially when it comes to sex and gender and gender expression. Even if it were necessary to wall parents off from the sex education being foisted on their children, there's no reason on earth to assume that schoolteachers should be allowed inside that wall.

Every person that advocates for ending sex-ed in public schools should have their hard-drives searched ASAP.

We had no sex ed in schools.
No sex ed for other primates.
I have chickens running around and am not sex edding them.

Now, what is the single most important reason for sex ed in schools?
I do not have a strong view but you do so you can sort this quickly.

...Canada has decided that discrimination against trans people is against their human rights code, so it's no more legal to disparage trans people than it is to disparage people for their race, sex, ethnicity, etc.
Whenever I accuse someone of breaking the law, I usually say which specific law they broke instead of throwing around schoolyard insults like "sucks to suck" and "take the L," but hey, you do you. It's nice to have someone to hold up the TRA end of the discussion, such as it is.

You tell me bud, you're the one complaining that the tyrannical Canadian state is slapping around transphobes. Surely any article about these situations provides some explanation for why that is happening.

I don't recall mentioning the Canadian state or claiming that it's no longer "legal to disparage trans people" in Canada. For all I know, you're right about that but (once again) you don't actually say which laws you're talking about here or how they might affect Amy Hamm's tribunal. I assume you would celebrate laws punishing people for expressing views contrary to your own, but that isn't what happened in this particular case.

For anyone who says "there are ONLY two genders" (this is about that newsclip about that stupid kid with the t-shirt that says that very thing, like it's a FREAKIN' FACT!!!), I have to say this:

YOU'RE WRONG

There are in fact, THREE genders in nature: male, female, and asexual.

What does this have to do with any of the discussions here?

Probably nothing but after seeing that newsclip for the millionth time (I'm obviously lying), I had to scream it somewhere.

Sorry.

There are no genders in nature. Gender is an entirely human social construct. How you want to count the number of distinct genders is arbitrary and meaningless.

There are two sexes in nature, male and female. An organism may be asexual, but that means it has no sex, not a third sex. Some organisms may be both male and female, but that too is not a third sex, it is both sexes.

So, in other words, you'd consider a woman who could impregnate herself (without any type of help from a man, including artificial insemination) as an example of only one gender and not as a separate one? Gotcha.

I guess that means you agree with the kid, but then if it's not a third sex than which of the two sexes (Male or Female) is someone who's...

A hermaphrodite (/hərˈmæfrəˌdaɪt/) is a sexually reproducing organism that produces both male and female gametes. Animal species in which individuals are of different sexes, either male or female but not both, are gonochoric, which is the opposite of hermaphroditic.

There are examples of this happening with humans.

What's her name?

Why, do you need a date?

How many human hermaphrodites are there?

True hermaphroditism represents of 5% of all disorders of sex development. Estimated frequency of ovotestes is one in 83,000 births (0.0012%). The exact number of confirmed cases is uncertain, but by 1991 approximately 500 cases had been confirmed.

Can a hermaphrodite human have babies?

Background: There are 11 reported cases of pregnancy in true hermaphrodites, but none with advanced genetic testing. All known fetuses have been male. Case: A true hermaphrodite with a spontaneous pregnancy prenatally known to have a remaining portion of a right ovotestis, delivered a male neonate.

Can a men get pregnant?
Is it possible? Yes, it’s possible for men to become pregnant and give birth to children of their own. In fact, it’s probably a lot more common than you might think.

Erm, as a starter for 10, how about her initial infamous tweet, in which she mocked the use of the term "people who menstruate" and wrote something addressing this akin to "I'm sure there's a term for such people: wimbum, wimmin (etc)".

And this is actually a nakedly anti-trans piece of grandstanding: Rowling is, in effect, wilfully disregarding the fact that some trans men (who are men, unless you're anti-trans) menstruate - which is the exact reason why it's appropriate* to use the term "people who menstruate" (and inappropriate & non-inclusive to use the term "women" in this context).

Rowling has made plenty more anti-trans statements since this one - it just so happens that this was the one which launched her into the ranks of the anti-trans bigots.

* Oh and before the wearily predictable accusations of misogyny and so on.... the very same principle applies to something like "people with prostates": most trans women (who are women unless you're anti-trans) have prostates, so it would be similarly inappropriate and non-inclusive to say "men" in this context.

How about keeping men and women, and adding new words when necessary.
So, people who menstruate becomes women and people who menstruate.
People with prostates becomes men and people with prostates.
